I will be making two week visit in manchester in August. I will be staying with friends for a couple of days but i don't what to burden them for an extended period of time. Does anybody have any suggestions regarding hostels? Also, how far does the american dollar go nowadays?

I have my reasons. A friend of mine is working there this summer and i thought it would be a good time to escape faraway. Do you suggest Disney world instead?
The American dollar goes nowhere over here except back in your pocket. It's about as welcome as crabs.
London's a better break than Manchester, more things to see and do.

Yeah but Dundee is better again. in cultural terms anyway.
The Weston Hall dorms at University of Manchester have pretty good rates. It's 45 pounds a night for the "hotel" part. It's an old UMIST dorm on Sackville Street if that means anything to you. There are some neat indie type clubs right around there.. and you are within short walking distance of the tram and a gazillion buslines. (as well as an independent movie theater and the site of the hacienda and old factory offices)
I am going in July and got the student rate (82 pounds a week) because I'm technically still enrolled there.

Like i said, i have my reasons for going. I caught the traveling bug recently, and like i said my pal is working over there this summer. I will also be attending a festival that my friend is spinning at. And yes, I have a passport. I also will try to get to london but$$$$ is tight. Is it so strange to visit the city that your musical heros hail from? I think not. Curiosity, really.

That's the reason I went there a year ago. Anyway, when I was there I stayed at Manchester Hatters and was very pleased with it, pleasant accomodation and very near the city centre. It's pretty cheap, around the equivalent of $25 a night (or so it was last year).

Yes, but in all honesty, unless your "musical heroes" are playing a gig theres not much point. I mean, are you going to spend a shitload of money to go and see the flats where the Hacienda used to be? Just search on t'internet and finding a picture wont be too hard.
Personally, I wouldnt bother in August, theres jack shit on in town because everyone is doing the festivals. Wait until the gig scene picks up again in October/November. The only thing happening in Manc this August is my Birthday. Which i'll be celebrating at V Fest anyway.

It's just when you live in a place you get kinda used to it so stop doing new things, I don't know of any mancs that have done the touristy stuff...But that's not to say it wouldn't be fun.

i wouldnt be visiting be if my friend wasnt there. The fact that NO is from manchester is an added bonus.
Manchester is brilliant! Have always spent lots of time there...............
But it it's nothing compared to London- can't beat that skyline on the Thames!

You just described my new years 2004! Went to night and day (I don't think it was dry bar but I can't remember) got drunk and then me and the guy I was living with at the time got jumped in the taxi queue by some Salford kids in front of the hotel thistle so we spent the night in A&E
