Aye, they're

Now, unnecessary overuse of punctuation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they help Internet posting communication. without a smiley a joke could sometimes be interpreted as nasty. :)

And frequently are, regardless of whether a smilie is used or not... ![]()

I did see the wink smilie, but got to thinking how some things may irritate others, especially when grammar is concerned. I hayte bad speling

Used in the right situation, i think they're brilliant. But i have often debated, when trying to get my point across, whether or not i should add one. As people have said previously, sometimes people use smilies when they shouldn't, ie. if they're having a dig at someone, and they can be construed as 'snidey'.
Occasionally i have thought people are being a bit serious with me just because they haven't used a smilie!!
(I struggled to decide wether to insert one here!)

Love 'em, but I think they should be used in moderation.
Like most people I just have a standard 3 or 4 I use, and don't deviate from that.
And there's a fair few of us here who I know even use them in e-mithers and texts.
This smiley really fcuks me off though. I'd genuinely chin someone if they pulled this face addressing me: :D

See?
I don't think you HAVE to use winkies everytime you're kidding.
If one thinks someone is being serious s/he is probably reading too much into the internet.
