seems the majority of bands have a hard time following up the sucsess of a stellar first release. Stone Roses anyone? What are some more memorable second releases that come to mind, that either outshined or equalled a great first effort?

The Cult, Love (after Dreamtime, not the death cult stuff) Pearl Jam, Vs. (after ten) Husker Du, Zen Arcade (after Metal Circus)

Vs easily equals, if not betters, Ten. Two of my favourite albums of all time right there.

It's the typical "sophmore jinx", isn't it? A band comes out of nowhere with a fresh, great debut album, and can't follow it up

Some groups that give lie to that are Radiohead (The Bends easily outdoes Pablo Honey), The Beatles (With The Beatles), Joy Division (Closer, of course).

New Order - PC&L The Cure - Seventeen seconds Depeche Mode - Construction Time Again (so it's their third release. But it's because of Alan Wilder that makes it good). Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (just as good as Gish). Pet Shop Boys - Actually (just as good as Please).

Jack, I'm an American. I have PC&L, Version 2.0, and Closer. The Sheryl Crow one, I just sold it on Amazon. I don't have Astro Lounge, but Smash Mouth is a good band.

House Of Love's second album

I'm of the mind that the second Bunnymen album, Heaven Up Here, is better than their debut (not that it's bad or anything).

and yup.. The Bends must be just about the biggest upturn in quality and sales from a first album.

It's certainly an easier pill to swallow than "Pablo Honey", which has some good songs on it but buried underneath some obvious filler and Nirvana-esque crap. The Bends is (so far, anyway) the highwater mark for RH (it seems like it's all downhill from there, the boys started to believe all the hype around themselves)

One that didn't sell well but is a cult classic: Weezer's Pinkerton

quintissential example.

many of the best bands are in the developmental stage on their first record, once they get to their second album they have learned alot and matured

bands that do one thing well or are a gimmick band usually "shoot their load" on the first record and are stuck doing the same thing which pales in comparison... then of course they shift from their strength and try something different and fail

the Beastie Boys who somehow managed to be both and reinvent themselves

All of those albums are second albums and are (in my opinion) better than their debuts.
