Bush is such an evil war-mongerer....hardly any of GHWB's children and grandchildren have served in the military...

I hate the draft, its undemocratic, its the reason my dad fought in a shite war, but i can't help to think that draft would stop more shite wars. Having a draft would light a fire under the asses of our college generation. They would become more involved just like the vietnam era.
Awesome. We're inching closer and closer to fascism every day because too many Americans don't give a shit.
Thank Jebus I don't have any special skills the military could possibly want. Unless masturbation becomes a weapon of mass destruction. ![]()
I, too don't want a draft. It would cause alot of disiplinary problems within the services. People that didn't chose to be there will create issues and destroy a team effort.
However, less and less of our population has been joining the military, even before the Iraq War. At some point the younger generation has to step up and answer the call to duty outside themselves.
Personally, I would like to see everyone complete at least two years of some sort of service / assistance that does not directly benefit themselves. Good example is the military, Peace Corps, Red Cross, or other voulentary foundations. That no one could become a citezen before completing something that benefits the whole, rather than themselves.
Currently our younger population is quite selfish, more interested in personal gain and making more money. It's an infection that needs repairing.

Speaking from a British point of view, well not even that,my own point of view...The draft should only apply if your country is under direct attack or imminent invasion.. Simply because governments systematically abuse the use of their armies,to fight piss-pot wars...which is clearly wrong as a bastard!
I'd be the first one shooting invaders on the beach, and biting their eyeballs out,so I'm not a pacifist...But the forces today are being mugged off, getting sent to Iraq and Afgahnistan!
Draft! Cheeky Cunts must think people are thick as fuck![]()

Excellently put... despite the British slang. ;)
Drafting people to inflict policies with dubious motives on other countries is an insult to the concept of American liberty.

Perhaps you should fact check your statement and get back with us.

Maybe you should stop supporting the incompetent moron who's in charge of your country.

That was a pretty lame comeback LG.

Like I say again and again: Bring back the times when the heads of the country had to go with their army into the field. These damn people today, sitting in their comfy chairs, seem to take all that shitty wars as a kind of PC game... Show Bush and his fellows some dead burnt and violated corpses and mutilated dead children. In reality...

What, you can't picture Bush, on his horse, leading the charge? ![]()

i'm always debating the draft with myself. I do believe the draft during the vietnam war gave birth to the protest movement. However, all the politician's sons and daughters would find their way out of the draft. Just ask Dick Cheney.

Jesus Christ. If you weren't so ridiculous you'd be very scary indeed.

How is this scary? That our population sees more than the borders of thier front yard and actually gets to see firsthand starving children; oppressed peoples; degrading enviroments; etc. Instead of sitting in forums discussing how the world needs to be a better place, they are actually DOING something about it.
It will give them better understandings to their decisions and votes, as they will have knowledge not dispensed to them by a politically, market-driven media, but by what they have SEEN.
Sometimes seeing is believing. . .and most of the time you can't turn on the light without getting out of bed.
But then, Martin, you only comment the opposite to what I mention, only as an asinine remark, hardly original.

68, I'll assume your comments are meant well, and not intended to sound, well, fascist. That said, your comment about making CITIZENSHIP contingent on "voluntary" service of some kind (you can't vote unless you do it=NOT VOLUNTARY) is completely repulsive to me. Removing the voluntary character of such service would eliminate a substantial portion of its benefit (both to those "served" and those doing the serving). Even more importantly, you cannot DEMAND service like that in exchange for the protections of citizenship--under the Constitution, you get those from being born here. Despite the difficulties America faces, those protections still mean something to alot of us, as does the fact that they cannot be arbitrariliy taken away.
If you simply meant that more people should take advantages of the opportunity to travel and serve others to enhance their education, I agree wholeheartedly. I think less people here would take an apathetic view of world affairs if they occassionally left our borders (moreover less people here would take the administration's word at face value, which would also be a good thing). I say that as a liberal, but more critical thinking needs to be done from all sides of the political spectrum--it is the clash of well-thought-out ideas that makes a republic like ours viable (and the near total lack thereof in recent years is having an effect as well).
Also, don't criticize younger people for laziness. Every generation does that, and its never correct. The current rising generation is no lazier than any preceding it (and if you think military enlistments being down evidences laziness or unwillingness to serve, you are dead wrong--look at voluntary enlistments during wartime throughout US history)
Besides, I suspect you are about my same age, and it makes you sound old. And crochety.

I agree that these things should be left as voulentary, however, there is a decline in those doing something more than themselves. Almost all wars in US history have not had an issue with enlistment, only Vietnam to current history.
As for the laziness for the younger generation, I notice it on a daily basis, I work with mainly 18-22 year olds. I also talked in depth with my buddy's father, who is a professor at a private university in philosophy for 30 years. He is alot more liberal than myself. But he has noted how there is a difference with the younger generation today believing they are owed "extra credit" for their in ability to be responsible. I know this is somewhat normal for those in the teens and twenties, but there has been a complete lack of understanding of responsibility that was not present before.
So I don't think voulentary services will get the voulenteers it should. Selfish people will not do something voulentarily, they need to be pushed.
Also my idea is more based on voting rights, not other citizenship rights.
and I feel old and crotchety anymore....how the hell did this happen?

I quoted this way because i couldn't figure out the other way. Cut and paste is easier when your a little pissed and have no patience. you discovered a pattern here. Shite wars since the 60's. Maybe the youth has it right, and are smarter than you think.
GHWB volunteered for the Navy. Had his plane shot up while bombing a radio station in Chichi Jima. He kepted his burning plane aloft until his crew were able to bail out. then he jumped out. He was lucky to have been rescued by a submarine for his crew were captured by the Japanese, beheaded and had their livers eaten. Perhaps he did not want his son to be captured and pulled a few strings? Much like my aunt and uncle who hid their kids from the draft.
