i guess a post of mine saying that soft cell is not a one hit wonder got overlooked, soft cell had other hits but those hits did not make top 40 in the u.s.: sex dwarf, baby doll, chips on my shoulder - all underground hits, no devo was not underground, devo was pretty popular in the early 80s as i remember, i mis posted in a hurry bout that one and devo still does live shows even now
soft cell had a reunion show(s) in 2002, it was absolutely fantastic, i was by the stage

Very underground! Tainted Love is the only song that charted in the US (top 100, anyway). I've heard of Sex Dwarf though nothing else you've mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if they've actually got a couple of good songs besides the two I've heard of though. It's always a mystery to me how some songs get airplay here and others get none.
P.S. A quick bit of research shows me they had 10 top 25's in the UK, several of them in the top 10.

I'm 37, so pretty much a geezer too. I was too late as far as getting into good music, though. :( "say hello wave goodbye" reached #38 in the UK but not in the top 40 in the US.

I think they had four No 1 hits in the UK, and a dozen top twenty hits. Say Hello Wave Goodbye i think was one of those number ones, (not #38!), as wasTainted Love, Torch and one i cant remember. They were the best selling artist in Europe in 1981. Last top twenty hit in UK was a couple of years ago. So deffo not a one hit wonder.

devo has quite of following in the states. They also just made a children's album, young kids singing their songs. Also, the singer, Mark summat does loads of soundtrack work for movies.

Erm, he had loads: Junge Roemer, Einzelhaft, Falco 3, Nachtflug, Out Of The Dark, Emotional, Wiener Blut, Data De Groove, and more!
(Most of the above are probably misspelt, as my German isn't up to much)!
Oh, and a mate of mine is a big Falco fan, and he wanted me to track them down about 10 years ago...
Falco did indeed die soon after making "Out Of The Dark" in a car crash - ironically, a comeback album...
