BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44. (NBCMSN)
I'm shocked. This guy has been on late-inght talk shows just recently and having survived so much crazy stuff he'd be thought for much longer time with us.

Saw this coming a mile off. A nob head for sure, but he seemed passionate abour critters.
Large parts of Australia are in mourning today. He may have come across as a bit of an idiot, but he was a great ambassador for wildlife and tourism. People I know who met him say that in real life he was exactly as he was on camera.
He managed to turn a minor zoo that he inherited into a global business empire as well.
He will be missed.

Yeah,always brought a smile to my face when he was on TV. At least he went doing something he was obviously passionate about.
Very sad news.He made some good telly with all the crocs and snakes,and seemed to genuinly love all the animals he handled..Mesmerised us in our house with some of the fearless shit he pulled,always came across as an over excited kid,but knew his stuff and always got the better of the beasts...until now.Quite shocked!
You spend your life diving onto crocodiles and waving snakes about, only to be the fourth person in Oz's history to be killed by a stingray. God really does have an odd sense of humour.

Really sad news, he was very passionate about animals and conservatiion. I was really shocked this morning. I always thought if he went it would be in the jaws of a croc.

He had a fairly stupid attitude towards animals and used them entirely for entertainment. The educational aspect of his TV show was virtually nil; the main focus was on distressing the animals in order to provoke them into violent behaviour. There’s probably a whole generation of kids with the impressions about the animals he featured, which are on the whole fairly passive. More worryingly, his stage-management of the supposed ‘attacks’ was designed to generate the impression that it was quite easy to get out of the way. Doubtless this was intended to portray himself as having special abilities, but was irresponsible from the point of view of encouraging copycat behaviour.
It might be interesting to see what he was up to with the stingray. He’s one of only a handful of people to manage to be killed by one: they are not in the habit of attacking people. If he died doing what he did best – abusing animals – then I suppose there’s been some sort of justice.
I suppose it’s all quite sad, but I can’t say I’m really very arsed.

RIP Steve.He was an entertaing guy although i kind of agree with what Colin said in his post.
And swinging his 10 month old son around in the front of a Croc was unforgivable.
What a way to go though. I thought he'd get beheaded by a Iguana or something, rather than stung by a stingray.

I'm not surprised he was killed; I just never thought it would be a stingray. Nice car though.
