Nah it wasn't A stingray, it was the World Aquanaut Security Patrol's finest ship, Stingray under the command of Captain Troy Tempest. They fired 2 sting missiles right up his chuff.

apart from various memories of him waving snakes about and jumpin onto crocodiles, my best memory of him is South Park. "Now i'm gonna stick my thumb up its ass! That'll really piss it off!"

Must confess that while reading the report of his death, a loop was playing in my brain of "this ere's a stingray folks, it's a realative of the shark and it's got giant banks of stinging cells along along it's ventral surface, enough to kill a man....now I'm gonna sneak over there and stick my thumb right up it's butt-hole....that'll REALLY piss it off."

Steve Irwin, rest in peace. He was one of the best people of our time.

I'm really surprised that the whole world seems to respect this guy now he's dead.

I seem to remember everyone taking the piss out of him up until this morning.

Is this the Diana effect all over again?

I think in time it'll be okay to mock him again, but for now we have to think about his wife and kids. They're certainly not laughing at the irony of his passing. :nonono:

Of course, I'm a huge asshole, so I'll be back to making fun of him by tomorrow :evil4:

Why do you have to make fun of someone all the time, sicko? Take it as it is.

Excerpt from a recent interview with the man himself:

Interviewer: 'So Steve, you have a great following amongst children and your shows are always popular with a younger audience. Tell me, what shows did you enjoy watching as a youngster?'

Steve Irwin: 'Well, I was always a big fan of anything to do with puppets. The Muppets, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, and I'll always have a place in my heart for Stingray'.

He'll probably become an Andy Kaufman type: he's not really dead, but in hiding, as it was his sense of humour.

He lives on

Is the croc suppose to be his light sabre?

Well, if he'd had some sunscreen on he'd have been OK, it protects you from harmful rays...

as a few have mentioned before, i never thought he'd go this way. then again, it's a bit like harry houdini: died when someone punched him (as part of a stunt) and he bled to death from the inside. a similar freak occurrence. anyhoo, he was an entertaining guy: lots of energy and charisma.

It might be interesting to see what he was up to with the stingray. He’s one of only a handful of people to manage to be killed by one: they are not in the habit of attacking people. If he died doing what he did best – abusing animals – then I suppose there’s been some sort of justice.

I suppose it’s all quite sad, but I can’t say I’m really very arsed.

This from CNN :"He and the underwater cameraman went out to do some pieces on the reef and coral and stuff good for the kids' show and, unfortunately, he came out over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand and the barb went up and hit him in the chest."

Thousand of people a year get stung by sting rays, but deaths are very rare unless it stikes a vital organ, as it did in Steve's case (the heart).

From the Guardian

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up and spiked him here [in the chest] and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone. That was it - the cameraman had to shut down." The police, who will pass the footage on to the coroner, insisted Irwin had not provoked the stingray. Superintendent Mike Keating, of Queensland police, said: "There is no evidence that Mr Irwin was intimidating or threatening the stingray. My advice is that he was observing the stingray."

So he saw the 'ray and got too close - for once he wasn't goading the animal to attack.

Kids who live in areas where singrays live are always told to stay away from them. Hopefully this sad event will re-inforce that lesson.

Irwin always insisted that the cameras would keep rolling if anything bad should ever happen to him. Now they have to decide whether to show the footage on TV.
