Move an entire year on though and at big school, in the first year: everything Ska and 2-tone and Mod'ish, so the Jam, Madness, Selecter, Bad Manners, the Beat.
Would probably say the Specials at aged 11.
It's a fcuking big leap from being 10 to being 11.

I defo remember being in Junior School and listening to the Jam. and the Ruts. mind you, this kid in our Street who was 3 years older got me into them, coz he had the singles.
also Specials, Dickies, Bad Manners and of course Madness.
I even had a trilby at one point, and all the badges.

at 5 to 10 years i liked mud, showaddywaddy... the wombles.. 11 years onwards .. specials. madness, etc at 12 found my love.. new order

When I was 10 it was the Velvet Underground and The Doors. I had some great records and a very cool uncle who was only too pleased to share his taste in music. Then I discovered The Ramones and the Sex Pistols in 1977. Joy Division followed in 1979.

I agree, I much prefer 80's music to the tosh that was around in the 90's. Apart from Stone Roses, and stuff, 80's pop was much better than 90's.

I don't remember being much into music when I was 10, but my favourite band when I was about 12 were Queen.
I remember being asked in the last year of the junior school (1983) who our favourite singers / bands were. Whilst all the other kids were saying Culture Club, Spandau and the Duranies, I got laughed at for saying Bob Dylan & Rod Stewart.
I realized yesterday that I wasn't into music before 1983 (my 10 years old), and that I didn't "follow" music before 1987 really... when I started to listen to the radio and make tapes, and in 1990, I started to listen to my own music instead of following the others :p
So for 10 years old, it has to be Culture Club and Duran Duran... I don't see any other really.

How could I forget Blondie! A passion I shared with me Dad, funnily enough! 
I remember when Denis went in at no.1 (it did, didn't it?) - defo in junior school.
Remember the first birthday present I actually bought for my Dad, out of my own money was Tide is High.
I totally concur with ELO; dad was a big fan, so knew all their hits off by heart.
Adam and the Ants were prolly my first real 'fave', and I must confess to liking FGTH as well...
I don't remember that far back, but Duran Duran and Wham are a couple of the first bands I remember liking. Maybe the Beatles too and even ELO, ala Arec!!
Coincidentally Pandora.com brought up ELO and OMD in the space of one day a while back. Haven't listened to ELO for probably over 20 years and only own OMDs 1st album now. Pandora is supposed to suggest alternative bands based on the feedback you give it. There might be some kind of link to what I like now.
1982 my favorite brand was probably Rush, and the Police, and i know for a few weeks in '82 i was heavily into Lynard Skynard!, mostly because they had cool Buttons

In all seriousness, I remember my uncle being big into rap from that time (I found some old decaying Public Enemy tapes of his from that time), I have fond memories of listening to the Beastie Boys before they grew a social conscience. My first tape was the Fat Boys, who were famous in rap circles for being...well, fat. 
Of course, that was also the era of hair metal, so I'm sure I grooved to some Whitesnake, Poison, etc. But I never, ever liked Aerosmith (who were also big back then) 
well...that would have been 1979, and I think it might have been Blondie...isn't that about the time Heart of Glass came out???

Huey Lewis and the News was my band at the time. Played the record Sports until it was worn out.
Before that it was Elton John (don't laugh), but I calledhim Johnny Junko since I was three because of the outfit he wore on his '74 Greatest hits album.
But I dropped Huey once I heard Substance 1987.

abba, tell you the truth, i still like them alot, but they are not producing any new songs at the moment or since the early 80s

looking back on this thread, when I actually was 10, my fave band, from what I liked from what my parents had, was a three-way tie between Creedence Clearwater, Led Zep, and Johnny Cash.
