Online Perverts

I heard an item on the Radio news about a website, CatchAPerv.com.

Basically, they open chatroom accounts posing as 14 year-old girls and wait (not for long, they reckon) for older males to come along and try to chat them up. They continue the discussions for a bit, let the men reveal themselves on webcams then turn their own webcams on (they call this part the 'reveal'). The reveal is quite amusing, as is the face of the older man who is clearly not expecting the sight of students making finger gestures and jeering.

Then they post the whole discussion, including webcam footage on the site. The public are then invited to comment on the footage (no £40 prizes for guessing the type of comments that are received – hardly any in support of the older men!)

The tone of the site is moralistic, but there are elements of quite base humour. Certainly, the ‘reveal’ seems to be a source of great amusement to the catchers.

Needless to say, most of the men they've 'captured' are none too chuffed and are trying to get their names, faces and actions removed from the site. The Police concerned that the people they catch may already be under investigation and this site could interfere with their work or prejudice any future trials.

I took a quick look last night and I can't lie, I had a good laugh at some of the blokes naivety. Very sinister stuff though.

There are also instructions on how to catch a pervert – should you have a use for one of your own.

Thoughts?

I'm thankful something like that is out there. My daughter may be 4, but it scares me to think there are assholes like this out there. At least with websites like this, people might give a second thought before getting involved into stuff like this.

Kind of amusing, but really, a lot of sick stuff goes on online. Tonight, as I was walking back to a bus stop, a friend calls me to tell me that an older guy online wants to pay him for sex. My friend asked if that counts as "whoring" himself or if he should just take the money.

Pity we cant run 30,000 volts down the live feed. Chain them up in the middle of town and let the public loose i say...

Pedophilia is pretty sick and unhealthy but so is dishonesty.

To pose as a phony target and purposely entrap these people is pretty screwed up. To claim to be righteous and brag about it is far worse.

Well, I don't want my kid (hypothetical, of course) to be talking to someone she thinks is her age but is really mine. So on that level, it's better to catch 'em before the actual act of violation occurs.

But I'm sure some folks may have unwittingly been snagged for reasons known only to them (Pete Townshend, a few years back, for instance). It's a no-win situation, because on the one hand you've got security and on the other there's privacy to consider.
