The Soundtrack to The Book :music: :read:

Something new and challenging to take our minds off the shitty Cardinals winning the Series (okay, maybe just my mind) :D

My 20th Century Lit teacher handed out an extra-credit assignment for the class today, in which she suggested that we approach one of the works we've read in a non-research paper format (collage of major events, painting, etc). The one that stuck out for me was the suggestion of putting together a "soundtrack" for one of the books, songs that either made us think of the book or seemed to mesh with it in terms of what all is going on.

So with that in mind, let's try something: come up with a soundtrack (no more than twelve to fifteen tracks) of one of your favorite books or just the one you read most recently, and share it with the people here. Hell, I'll even start, as this is something I'm going to do for the easy grade (five points added to midterm grade...that way I get an A overall and can exempt the exam):

The Who, A Quick One While He's Away The Beatles, And Your Bird Can Sing Bob Dylan, Like a Rolling Stone (Live at Free Trade Hall, Manchester, 1966)

Honestly I didn't suspect you were such a hippie music man, ha ha. But what swinging book is that?

Surely Thomas Pynchon deserves some stranger music than all that.

At the moment, I can't think of a whole list of songs, but to me, the Pet Shop Boys' "Tonight is Forever" reminds me of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.

When I first heard New Order albums they reminnded me of works by the Impressionists.

Great idea! Something to keep the gears grinding at my mindless job. I'll come up witha few in the next coming days. I'm currently trying to finish my Bukowski phase and don't have much of a collection of Booker T. & The MG's and various other boogie/jukebox music. Perhaps I'll start with the obvious Catcher In The Rye....

Sorry for my lack of explanation... I don't necessarily mean the genre...actually, it's more about the lyrics. In other words, the lyrics remind me of some parts of the novel.

Er Taboo, why no NO/JD? Surely there must be something that is appropriate to the book...

I was trying to stick to 1966-67 (when the book came out) for context...though I immediately violated that with "Instant Karma", which came out in 1970. But it seemed to fit...

I'm going to try and put one together for Don DeLillo's White Noise, just to see which one I want to turn in for a grade. Expect some JD/NO for that

From this point of view Fall songs don't need a book since they are soundtracks to themselves. Like an endlessly reflected looking glass.

Anyway, finished Wuthering Heights over the weekend (it should be titled Incest Are Us, as everyone's related in that book), and I felt moved to make my own soundtrack to the book. Some of the choices are sincere, some are sarcastic, I leave it to you to figure out which is which:
