Interesting, considering that I just came from an aborted screening of The Motorcycle Diaries at school tonight.
I say "aborted" not because of the controversial subject matter, but because the DVD was fucking up and finally I gave up about an hour into it. I was not the first to leave the screening tonight because of the technical difficulties, and I probably wasn't the last. But I did stick around for about the first hour of the film before the "Stop-Start-Stop Theater" just got to be too much.
Anyway, the film itself was pretty good despite the mess-ups. He's presented in a sympathetic light to be sure, but that's to be expected as it's based on his writings. But I think something that should be noted: films aren't meant to be historical documents for the most part (and the ones that are often get it wrong). So it's an enjoyable film (what I got to see of it). And it's got some genuine lol moments as well

It's a very pissy argument to complain about any violent reaction that occurs when you opress a group of people to the point where they are forced to act in defense.
If you take the piss out of people, you'd better be ready for their reaction. It's no good treating everyone like shit, losing the revolution and then complaining that people got hurt in the trouble.

Er, I did see that documentary and I remember him being a bit of a lush, but I clearly missed the spunk drinking. And it's not the kind of thing I'd miss.

sorry to intervene in your 'is che good or bad' discussion, but to go back to the original question there is a good book by noam chomsky called revolutionaries. it's not all about che by any means but it's a good start, especially if you like chomsky.
if you don't like chomsky it's terribly left-wing and will make your head explode, so don't read it.
The problem with Chomsky is he's terribly pessimistic and sees conspiracies everywhere. Of course, not hard to fall into pessimism if you have any awareness of the world beyond your own skin...

i'd be pessimistic if i taught at a math-based university, as well. that and i'd feel lonely.
