Got my license at 21, so I've no room to talk 
But learning to drive can be a fun/horrifying experience, stick with it and soon you'll be just as good at multi-tasking behind the wheel with a cellphone on one ear, half of your iPod headphones in the other, a bagel and coffee in one hand, a Blackberry in the other, steering with your knees while balancing strawberry jam for the bagel on your lap, and also cranking up the studio real loud to hear whatever the "Top 40" radio station is playing every hour on the hour because they really enjoy forcing crap songs on you until you finally throw up your hands in disgust and that's when you almost cut right into the tractor trailer in the median lane while your passenger starts doing Hail Marys to save themselves from the eventual crash that will take you both....
So have fun with that 
All I have to say is, come learn how to drive in California. Judging by the way people drive around here, it'll be remarkably easy.
Step 1: figure it out yourself
Step 2: ignore most laws and all right-of-way rules
Step 3: when in doubt, honk your horn at everything like a fucking idiot

Regarding #2...isn't it just that their laws are all ass-backwards from the other 49 states? So it's probably all those damn tourists causing the problems....

some people live in areas of sophistication where cars are not necessary and public transportation is easier and more convenient. I can get a bus in front of my place--the closest i can part is like 3 blocks away. blah.

I'm going to be taking lessons on a manual as well.. as they are CHEAPER and I do not want to have to move so that I can afford a car and where i live

Yeah, I figure that if I learn to drive from a driving school on a stick shift I'll learn how to do it correctly. I hope I pick it up though, I know there's a lot of like nuances to it as opposed to manual. lollers

My advice is to get your lessons as soon as possible. Apparently you are likely to pass your test much quicker the younger you are.
Do you have to do a written/theory test as well as the actual driving test? How much are lessons over there? They're £20/hour here. Just interested to see if that's another thing that we pay more for.

It's quite different in PA.
You have to take the "written" test first. It's a CBT with 20 questions and you have to get 17 right to pass. But if you get any question about alcohol wrong it's an automatic fail. I'm glad I was told that in advance because I had a question about the legal bal for a minor. I would have thought it'd be zero beings as tho minors can't legally drink...but it's not!
Then you get your permit and then you can practice or get your license. If you're over 18 you can take the driving test the next day (might be same day I've not really looked because I don't know how to drive) and you don't have to have 50 hours behind the wheel like minors do. 16-18 yos have to wait 6 months before you take your driving test.
You don't have to take lessons either, tho it helps with insurance etc. But I think a classroom only drivers ed class does too, which I'm not taking on top of driving lessons.
And the amount I'm gonna pay for driving lessons is insane. About 2.5 times what you're talking about. I think that's because most adults don't take them. (And students only take them and normally at a discount through school or something).
The laws are different state by state. I only know PAs.

Yes, manual is the REAL driver's choice. Both me and my wife own manuals (she actually taught me since my parents owned autos). Sadly, I don't think the manual will be around when my 6 month old son is old enough to drive
Honda's already charging MORE for the manual and less for the automatic. Something about changing the factory line

Someone told me just yesterday that the driving test is about to be made even harder..Apparently,they are going to fail any test takers who leave the car in a low gear for longer than is necessary,in an effort to reduce carbon emissions from drivers..sounds a bit harsh,but I would'nt be surprised...Probably won't apply in the states though Chrissy,cos they don't give a fuck about the planet,do they?
Still,seems a bit arsey to me,and just another way of getting the numbers on the road down.

PA already has that in the driver's manual i don't know what we'll be tested on.. I assume everything. PA is really harsh for the environmental stuff

That's interesting considering some cars are actually more efficient at higher rpms and I've read articles by automotive engineers that recommend wide-open-throttle to increase gas mileage. Guess it all depends on who's writing the laws.

Yes,25% of the entire world's carbon emissions kinda harsh on the enviromental stuff,it seems...
