The voting machine thing in particular should enrage every American surely? If democaracy and voting are so utterly key to the apple pie way of life, shouldn't the tiniest sniff of a hint that something might be less that 100% perfect 100% of the time, drive the entire nation into a frenzy?
Y'all need to get yer heads round this.....what winds us about about Yous'uns is things like the above, and things like the list of "republican" beliefs I posted. It's the bizarre double standards, the unbelievable self-centredness ( of the nation, not any individual here I mean)...and frankly, that you o not live up to your own hype. The US media pumps out borderline propaganda with the whole "truth, justice, and the American Way" malarky. We are raised on this shite....me less so than most, having always favour British TV shows, even when I was a kid[2], when we later find out that the US, in addtion to the occassional great service to mankind, does actually do really evil shit too, within and without......it pisses us off. From then on, hearing US rhetoric is painful, upsetting, and infuriating.

Ultimately you need to act like what you are. You're a rich, powerful, and relatively well educated nation, in fact the richest and most powerful. I found this long speech very interesting. I do not agree with it enterily but at least 3/4 of it is truth. Not another country promotes itself like the USA do, so I find normal that they got sometimes a bad feedback.
If find also quite crazy the numbers of threads that have been written about these US elections so far. If I well remember : Canadian ones - 1 thread made by Nicolas (almost embarrassed to spam BCD with the political life of his country) German ones - 1 thread. I do not know if Bere wrote it, but only one even if the results were tought. British ones - a few more, but well, BCD mainly belongs to Brits and Americans. Nothing upon the Italian ones - but it was worth to get rid of Berlusconi... Polish ones - thank you Arek (our Warsaw nooler) to enlighten us about the politics of your country... He we have an election 22 november. Prior to the previous election, 4 years ago, a politician was shot dead here. Any of you remember that or even his name? We don't have presidents although he would have liked to have been one. Things have changed the last few years over here. So we should care I guess.

If your experience of America is a two week holiday in Florida or Vegas then I can see how you might come to that conclusion but to describe "Americans" (whatever that's supposed to mean, it's a big place you know) as "the most helpful people you'll ever bump into" is fucking preposterous.

I can see your points. Not to say I agree with them, but I think they are valid. What it boils down to, I think is that our media is out of control. One of the big differences from the US and many other countries is that we air our laundry out to EVERYONE, and nothing is held back...even assumptions which may not be true. This does nothing good for our image as a country. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking to cover up stories, but rather the media take more thought in the impact it will have in its aftermath.
One of the differences with the US vs other countries is that it was built on ideas that aren't tangible. I think this comes off as a foriegn idea to many countries.
Anther problem is that we are, for the most part, a secluded country. When people go to vacation, they mainly stay within the US and don't travel and see other cultures. This has been good in keeping our self-image, but bad in understanding how to play well with the other kids out there.
In the end though, no offense taken by your post...a quite informative one that gives me a better understanding.....at least it explains more than just the "US are cunts" phrase.

Your missing the point. Each election is very relevant to the people who live in that country. Why is it that only the American posters on this board feel the need to spam it with 8 different threads on the same subject. Some people might conclude that it's indicative of their arrogance and inability to grasp the fact that there is a whole other place out there called the "rest of the world" where most people couldn't care less about what goes on at your elections.

Given, 8 posts was a bit much for me as well, and I did not start any of them. One for the elections and one for Rumsfeld standing down would have been appropriate though.

I think the point about American elections being "more important" than elections in other countries contains a hint of truth, given America's self-appointed role as policer of the "Free/Capitalist World" (to which everyone else is made to follow lock-step). With America trampling across the globe on its little neocolonialist ventures, this week's election is very significant because the power relations have shifted for the first time in 12 years and...wait for it...America might actually start behaving itself better on the global stage. Maybe. Just maybe. So perhaps instead of whining about all the election threads, the rest of you might want to take things with a grain of optimism. But we shall see how the next few years pan out....

When a French president do not say "amen" to American policy (Irak's invasion for an example), the country is almost listed on the list of the "axis of the evil"... and products are boycotted etc, etc...

OK. Everyone looks what happens in the USA. I do not know how it goes in Kazakhstan, but here, you cannot switch on a radio or a TV without being aware of the US elections... So, in my opinion, one thread could have been an option... well three maybe... one for the Democrats, one for the Republicans and one for the "my vote depends on my mood"...
