Just looked at Marty's problem site and registered so I might start giving her/ him/ it shit on there.

Yeah - Major is talking sense this time - the mix of programmed / ethnic / rock drumming and percussion on Tears For Fears's first album and singles is actually very very good. Played by three guys in fact: Manny Elias, Chris Hughes (who used to play with Adam and the Ants) and Jerry Marotta.

I actually thought at the time I bought it - 1983, aged 18, that "The Hurting" was a very strong debut LP for any band....but for some reason it's now considered taboo to admit to ever liking Tears for Fears (bit like the OMD syndrome methinks)...

By the way Stevie, did I tell you that I sampled the shuffling jungle noises at the intro for the track "The Prisoner" (one of my faves on that album - others being "Memories Fade", "Watch Me Bleed" and "Pale Shelter") to use as part of the soundtrack for my short 10 minute film/animation I made when I was at Uni back then??

I had just started to look through my CD collection for inspiration when I remembered what my answer to the question is: it's "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by The Beach Boys.
Why? "Pet Sounds" is my favourite album and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is my favourite track on the album.

If I read through the track listing of every CD in my collection I may find a single song on another album that I prefer but I really doubt it because I think "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is about as close as it is possible to get to musical and lyrical perfection. There's nothing in it that could be improved in any way, from the deceptive intro through the exquisite harmonies, the magical orchestration and the slowing-down build-up to the last verse to the lullaby singing in the fade out. Threaded into this are the most child-like but worldly-wise lyrics, sung with real emotion. Actually, it's not close to perfect - it is perfect.

Less Stress - Strange and Distant Music, yeah it's a bit of an obscure 'b' side,probably not many of you will know, if it wasn't obscure I'd probably like something else more.

Actually this talk of one's favourite ever songs is a vexing thing because I have two separate perceptions of what constitutes my ultimate list of best ever songs: a list of songs that variously make me go "wow!" and jump up and down with glee, and a parallel list of songs that simply MOVE ME TO TEARS or induce misty-eyed recollections of earlier, happier and more innocent times. To this latter list I have to namecheck some songs that will ALWAYS live with me simply through the emotional effect/impact they have had on me from an early age.... (this is just a random selection - the list is immense)

Yep - got that too - Bought it when it was released as I like Spiritualized - and yes, what a truly UPlifting record that is! Especially the BeachBoys pastiche "Do It All Over Again" - their most blatanly pop moment. The only gripe I had with this otherwise very fine record is Jason's deadpan nasal vocals tend to grate after a while...they do the ambitiously grandiose arrangements no favours...but only a minor gripe nevertheless.....

Today, mine would be Estuary Bed by The Triffids. Great tune that alludes to the feelings that love and desire can create, gentle hints but no open declarations. David McComb was a genius. R.I.P.

This song was off the Flowers album ... Most of their other stuff was pretty lame compared to this first one. Anyway, this is a perfect example of driving guitar, early 80s synth rock where the guitar is powerful, but doesn't drown everything else out. Alot of people I've played this song to think that its dated pretty badly but I love it.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme by Simon and Garfunkel

Simple beautiful and also complex with Canticle sung as the harmony. Always been a big sucker for a bit of folk/roots music and this is everything it could be. Bad luck to Dylan, Tom Petty and Carole King who were all just pipped at the post

Sorry Marty but I can't agree with you about Jason's vocals on "Let It Come Down". He may not the world's best singer but his vocals suit the songs perfectly. When the lyrics are scornful so is his vocal. When the lyrics are guilt-laden so is his vocal. When the lyrics are tender so is his vocal. Given a choice between a singer who can do anything with their voice but doesn't sound like they mean what they're singing and a singer who is, to be blunt, limited but sings with genuine feeling I would choose the latter every time.

If my argument hasn't convinced you just think about JD's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Ian's vocals suit the sentiments of the lyrics perfectly and if he had sung the song in any other way it wouldn't have been as good as the version we know and love. The same can be said for Paul McCartney on The Beatles' "Yesterday", Michael Stipe on R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts", Keith Flint on The Prodigy's "Firestarter" (I know I've made one hell of a leap there but trust me) and pretty much every track on "Pet Sounds" or "Let It Come Down". When a singer gets a song (and it's usually one of their own songs) absolutely right there's no way any No.1 hit-seeking pop group, lazy bandwagon-chasing dance producer or contestant on Pap Idol can improve upon the original.

Fave song of all time! Toughie, since we can only pick one. I would have to say "3 Libras" By A Perfect Circle! I love them because they have a lot of influence by The Cure(old Cure that is)! It is truly a beautiful song that I never tire of or(i'm not making a list here):lol CURVE "Perrish." It is a tie between the two!

i bought a record as a seven year old kid last week, but I didnt get a discount so not doing it again. starman one of my fave bowie songs too, hunky dory a top album. as for a favourite song could say one now but it would be different in 5 mins. first one i paid cash for was reward teardrop explodes.

dead kennedys, "saturday night holocaust." total fucking abrasive brilliance and tension, with a slow dissonant beginning and a sudden acceleration that explodes into malevolent focus. all this chaos in a rock song. brilliant. one of the best lines ever in the lyrics: "if i lit a match to you, you would melt before my eyes."
