Anyone recommend a good Internet Service Provider?

After 14 months of shitty and slow service I've decided to abandon Tiscali UK and look for a new service provider. I got sick of my current connection because from 5:30pm to midnight EVERY sodding evening I could barely load web pages let alone do online gaming or bittorrenting. Around midnight/1pm the service would jump back to the full 2mb speed but it's bedtime by then hence useless.

At the moment, I'm seriously considering Demon because that's what my brother's on in London and it seemed very fast and reliable when I used it.

Before I sign on the dotted line for a new ISP can any UK NOOLers recommend any other good and reliable providers? It has to be ADSL because we don't have cable coverage in the Angus countryside so NTL/Telewest is out. I'm not considering BT either because I don't want a cap on how much I download.

Word of warning to anyone considering Tiscali: fucking don't do it! :nonono:

Don't do talk talk or Bulldog either. you can never get hold of them.

I'm with Demon and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Not the cheapest, but like anything you get what you pay for. Up to 8Mb, fixed IP address and no cap (a 'fair usage' clause applies).

Demon Home 8000 looks good.

£20 a month.

I was paying £22 with Tiscali but they also gave free calls. Suppose we'll have to go back to bastard BT.

Seek help!

As for your worries....either they have no bit-torrent throttle in place, and you're just getting hammered cos of a piss poor contention ratio and the fact that everyone's gulping down the bytes.

ORRRR they DO have a sin-bin for torrenteers, and you get fucked into it every evening to let decent folks use the net

I'm with freeuk...only 512/256 but NO limts, and No fannying around.

Looking at that it seems they don't do the exact package I signed up for any more, the difference seems to be no webspace and a dynamic IP. Still looks OK though.

I have had some issues since being upgraded to 8 meg, but that's due to my exchange, not Demon who have been more than helpful in trying to resolve my problems.

I think Demon have won to be honest OB, signing up with them today cos I got a MAC release code from Tiscali. I'm told handover should be pretty seamless.

Hopefully I'll have a normal connection again from the end of next week :thumb:

Demon are about to be/have just been, sold.

not sure if this has ANY bearing at all though.

What have you paraphrased the net nomenclature of the silly-haired one then?
