Heard that he died this morning.Having smoked 80 fags a day for a large part of his life,he then went on to make a small fortune from writting books on the subject of giving up smoking.

I tried to give up using one of his books but could't get into it.Had to use patches in the end.

He died of lung cancer, aged 72.

Well he gave up 23 years ago apparently. So it was NOT smoking that gave him cancer

No offense, but Yahoo had an article that mentioned a study about smoking. The study said that there is no significant decrease in the mortality rate when a person quits. The finding would depend on how much the person smoked and how long... it wouldn't come to me as a surprise that a person like Carr would die. NC is famous for tobacco; I know some people who lost their lives from smoking.

So the best bet is to keep smoking then? Since stopping doesn't help, and smoking funds healthcare through taxes, you should defo keep smoking.

I think the key to it is forgeting to smoke.

I can go a hell of a long time sans ciggies as long as I am totally occupied.

I'm a smoke-a-holic, just one and I'd be back on them again, no problem.. I have the odd moment when I think 'ahhh bisto' to the smell of a cigarette, but as long as I get through those times I'm actually quite good.. it's the other vices you replace smoking with that are the trouble..
