Lit Matches Prompt Emergency Landing

By Martin Weil Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, December 6, 2006; Page A08

A jetliner from Washington made an emergency landing Monday in Nashville after passengers smelled matches being struck, a Nashville airport spokeswoman said.

Lynne Lowrance, spokeswoman for Nashville International Airport, said that a passenger on the Dallas-bound flight, which had originated at Reagan National Airport, had been striking matches to mask evidence of a troubled digestive system.

Lowrance said the pilot of American Airlines Flight 1053 asked at 6:25 a.m. Central time to make an emergency landing in response to passengers' concerns about the matches.

Lighting matches on a plane is prohibited, Lowrance said.

After landing, the 99 passengers and five crewmembers left the plane. Luggage was placed on the ground for dogs to sniff. In one part of the cabin, searchers found signs that matches had been lit.

Under "lengthy questioning" by the FBI, the passenger "did say she had some type of medical condition" that embarrassed her, Lowrance said. "She did admit to striking matches to conceal the odor." The woman was released but was not permitted to reboard the flight, Lowrance said.

The woman, who lives in Texas, was trying to get on another flight and apparently did, Lowrance said.

The woman was not identified.

How did she get the matches on in the first place???

Still, how thoughtful of her. I was on a 12 hour flight to India once and had to endure the odd odour emanating from the guy next to me across the aisle.

that entire story is ridiculous

Why couldn't they have figured that out while the plane was flying? Also, why did they find it necessary to have all the luggage laid out for dogs to sniff?

If I were a passenger on that flight, I'd be pissed.

i'd fart on a plane....and i'd be so scared, i'd be shitting myself, and i wouldn't be ladylike about it. cos i'd be crying...

They're paranoid about every little thing since you know what...if it had been a guy wearing a turban, lighting matches, the plane would be flying sideways due to people attacking him, and i'd be parachuting out that motherf*****.

sorry.

Read this last night. I'm sorry but the whole story is so TMI and stupid for my taste.

Note that the match idea is Southern; I have seen an episode of "King of the Hill" that showed an example of this. Bobby accidentally burns a church down.

Ah, the Southern life; it sucks.

What's wrong with coughing loudly to mask the rasp then glaring at the person next to you and saying "Oh my god your disgusting you should see a doctor." Like most women do. Mind you you'd get one of those whitty replies, "The one who smelt it dealt it."

"The one who denied it supplied it."

"Fuck me we'll have to abort the flight and get a team of federal agents involved."

Fucking Americans
