The Police

Caught a recent interview of Stewart Copeland and decide to give blonde cops another spin on my stereo. way back when before I discovered The Order The Police were my fave band. But by 1984 it was over. I had all their lps except the live one and the best of. I did purchase the box set. Pathetic, everything they ever did on 4 cds.

Having a long road trip in my slow ass LandCruiser I attempted to rediscover what had occupied my ears during high school. All I can say now is that most of it is crap. Sting sucks, horid vocals. Instrumentally dull. Some songs are good especially the Warsaw rip off, Visions in the Night.

However, Zenyatta Mondatta (lp titling not their forte) is still my fave of theirs.

They had some good material in their time. But yeah, Sting sucks. Easily the worst of the three. Stewart Copeland, an amazing drummer. Andy Summers, a brilliant guitarist. So of course Sting became "the star" as aging new wavers eased into jazz...

...But Andy Summer's tracks were all uniformly awful.

Like the one about "Mother" on Synchronicity.

Joe Strummer said it best (from a review of The San Francisco performance of The Clash, January 1984:

With the two new guitarists fumbling to keep up, the band never struck any rhythmic gold until late in the concert, ironically, during a bass and drums break in "Police and Thieves" when Strummer had sent one of the guitarists offstage, presumably to tune his instrument. Between drummer Pete Howard and bassist Paul Simonon, the two musicians worked up a chugging, bumping interchange that rumbled agreeably through the hall. In introducing the number, Strummer delivered one of his trademark tirades on culture and the folk process in popular music. "This is punk meets reggae," he explained, "not white reggae. We add some of our own culture to it, so this is no ripoff. I'm talking to you Sting," he shouted, referring to the vocalist-songwriter for the Police, whose work has sometimes been accused of misappropriating Jamaican rhythmic ideas.

Some good radio tunes here and there, but doubt I'd ever be compelled to buy the albums

Loved The Police. Still do. Stewart Copeland was easily the most talented member of the group, though. I could do without Sting's solo stuff.

One of the first bands I ever got into. Wrote top choons, had three great musicians, and hardly any filler.

Amazingly, he's right.

The Police were brilliant, Summers is an amazing guitarist, who really brought the songs to life. If you compare the original live versions to the absolute tosh that Sting plays now there really is no comparison.

Best songs are Tea in The Sahara, Secret Journey and Synchronicity.

always thought stings voice suited the band, not liked his solo stuff, but my favourite quote about them has to be julian cope in concert in bristol once when he said

Never liked the Police, just couldnt see the point of them. Never bought any of their records. Sting is a complete tosser. Thats all I have to say about them.

Loved the Police. True naming wasn't a stong point. Started out concise and- or sharp. So Loney. Everything Little thing she does is magic.. Outlandos D'amour. Regatta deBlanc 79?. Ghost in the Machine 81. Listened through the mid- late 80s though.

Then they mellowed. Sting had a great voice then like NO learnt how to sing. Can't stomach his new age anything Jazzy. Painful and a shame yet a kick to hear the occasional tune over the radio.

the police were a great band and they quit on top. like any bad they did have some stinkers(de do do do ) but overall they had great material especially the fist two albums, i hate to say it but sting got me into playing the bass.

copeland just released a DVD of his Super 8mm movies while he was touring with the police its pretty interesting.

Used to like The Police,got Regatta Da Blanc and The Singles,not mad on his solo stuff apart from FRAGILE,FIELDS OF GOLD,and RUSSIANS.

Sting did do a classic turn on The Simpsons, "Bart In the Well". I love the moment when he says he decided to help because Bart is "such a big fan" and Homer looks around nervously.
