Don't know if any of you live there, if you do, are you guys okay? Cos I know thats a rare thing for England, etc to have tornadoes. You could see inside some of those houses...I wonder if the air raid sirens were used to warn people. Anyone know.?

Well there are several salient points needing made....

  1. It's been 60+ years since there was an air raid in london, I doubt the warning system is in place.
  2. Tornardoes here are small affairs, and are also the product of freak weather conditions, these facts coupled with the fact that England is very small and very hilly, would mean that a forecast warning of the type issued in America would not be possible.
  3. We build our houses out of grown up things like stone and bricks in the UK. Ironic that we rarely experience tornadoes and yet build strong homes, yet people who live in "tornado alley" build there's out of wood and tissue papre, and then have the audacity to WHINGE when a fucking tornado blows it to matchwood killing their kids in the process.
  4. My mum was nearly swept away by one in Carrckfergus when she was a wee girl, instead it picked up the baker's van and dumped it in Belfast Lough. But of course, they're all caused by global warming and therefor could NEVER have happened in the 1950's

well, the rooves ain't too sturdy(i guess not vaults, like that would make any difference anyway). i figured that it was a freak occurence. i wonder if some of those people actually went outside looking to see what the noise was when it was coming. its really not funny, but it reminds me of people here in the states.....

Didn't realise this at the time, but I 'heard' this yesterday.

Big bang outside somewhere yesterday morning and we were trying to work out in the office if it was a bomb, or thunder. About 2mins later it started hailing like you'd never seen before, so put it down to the thunder.

Likewise, heard the bang but didn't give it much thought, hadn't really made the connection until reading your post above!

We're all still alive. Thanks for the concern, Animad. :thumb:

Our weather pattens are actually rather good for Tornados and they are alot more common here than you might think.

From BBC weather site...

"Based on the 30 year average, 33 tornadoes occur every year in the United Kingdom. However during 1998 there were 45, while 1982 experienced a total of 152."

As for the Air Raid system

I think we should try to get it up and running again.

It could sound everytime Tony Blair or Ken Livingstone stands up in London to say something stupid

I was in North London on Holloway Road, it was very wild at about 11am, thought the roof was going to come off!

I have just checked the times and I also heard this. I was down in the reception talking to security when we heard the crashing and assumed it was thunder, although there was no sign of rain.

Surely "to say something stupid" is surplus to requirements?

I mean, have you ever heard them say anything sensible?

Still at least Ken is a socialist, remember when Labour had those?

is it still storming there? yeah, it was probably thunder you all heard, just sounds odd sometimes when the weather patterns are unusually off kilter. bit of a weather fanatic, so long as there is no whirlwind on top of my head, i ain't gonna step outside looking for the damn thing anyway. :D

SHite, I stand corrected. So errrm, where's Tony Benn and Tam Dalziel?

Seems you lot have a choice, right, far right, or BNP.

Greg's area is lighting really - which would be useful for ensuring we only get flattering footage. He can handle a camera well enough too mind.

We can't afford food where I come from, so it's a rarity for me to produce fecal composites of any type, however when me or my mam, dad, grandma, one of my seven uncles or aunties, 32 cousins or 5 brothers or sisters who live together in a two up two down on a cobbled street in Lancashire does have a shite we tend to do it next to the fireplace, let it dry out and use it for heating or cooking the way the Irish use peat.

Cheers
