Did ANYONE ever buy a MINIDISC?Although they have superb advantages like the EDIT facility for NAMING the records,i only EVER purchased ONE pre recorded ONE.Namely TWISTED TENDERNESS and probably only played it a few times.Nice item when i was a COLLECTOR!

Never purchased a pre-recorded one, although I must have recorded 100 gigs on mini disc. I have now moved on to the M AUDIO 24/96 Micro Track Compact Flash recorder after talking to Alex.

I have finally moved into the 21st Century by buying a 2gb MP3 player for 35 notes. Dogs bollocks it is, I downloaded about 20 cd's to it at the weekend. So the new trendy Shug is currently blasting RONNIE LANE, THE FACES, DYLAN, JOY DIVISION, NEW ORDER, THE MONDAYS, ROSES, CHARLIES, BILLY BRAGG, EARLY OASIS & 808 STATE through his ears on the way to work 
they are quite handy for recording purposes, but now that we all have cd burners and you can do digital recording on other devices, they are a bit redundant. Still I have have a friend who swears by them.
No pre-recorded MiniDiscs, but loads of MDs I've burned myself. Pity the inferior CD became the recording medium of choice.
They were quite big here in Japan up until a few years ago, but I never bought one. When I was younger, I used to use cassettes and CDs; now, I use CDs and an iPod.

In what way is lossless P/Q encoded PCm INFERIOR to what is essentially a high rate mp3 on yer minidisc?
Ability to re-record one million times with no loss of sound quality; editing ability; sound quality virtually, but not quite, as good as CD.
Minidiscs had the same write capacity as CDRW, a few thousand, not millions os re-writes. And while the editing was handy, much of it was pretend editing, skipping bits of song rather than deleting them, after a while you ended up with a MD that was more fragmented than your PC HD.
I rather liked MD and DCC, but as soon as CDR got cheap, glorfied MP3 recorders were always gonna fail.

You must have a long journey to work to get through 20 cd's.........
Owned 2 portable MD recorders from about 2000-2003 before moving over to iPod.
Great little pieces of technology but with the first one my only gripe was the amount of time it took to record discs. Having said that, the ability to make "extended albums" by adding bsides or remixes to the running order was pretty cool at the time. The sound quality was excellent too; just used a discman and an optical cable.
By the time I got my second MD, LP2/4 had arrived and was a revelation for getting CDs onto MDs quickly via USB. That got rid of the recording slowness problem but again, a big downside was that LP2/4 sounded bollocks with it's low bitrate and watery sound quality. I never touched LP4 as I couldn't get any enjoyment from the way the music sounded. LP2 was adequate at most.
I was quite happy to stick with MD forever as I had a fair old collection of custom discs built up but in late 2003 it decided to stop recording (would still play) which rendered it mostly useless. I took it to a local Sony Centre and after 2 weeks they offered to fix it for slightly more than I bought it for (£210).
Jaw hit deck, told em to fcuk right off and bought an iPod the next day.
Never looked back and if you ask me, Sony still haven't come up with a decent rival product since.
tHIS thread has reminded me that i must get a bloody IPOD soon.Only got about 20 tunes on my phone and i can't be arsed to change them! TRouble now is i have loads of good music only on MINIDISC.
Had a VW Golf with one in once,It was standard (think VW thought it was more upmarket than a CD player),anyway it got took out about 3 days later and replaced by a CD.

I have 3 pre-recorded minidiscs.
Including Suede's Electricity - which was the first (and, probably, last) ever MD single (apparently!)...
