Mayor calls special study session for today
CATHEDRAL CITY -- Cathedral City Mayor Kathy DeRosa has called a special study session meeting for 4 p.m. today at the Civic Center, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero.
The meeting is to review and discuss the 2006 strategic plan.
The council will then go into a closed session to discuss property negotiations.
The properties listed are:
South of East Palm Canyon Drive, West of Perez Road. Negotiating parties are the Cathedral City Redevelopment Agency, Andy Jessup Jr. and Bobby Doremus. The property owner is the Cathedral City Redevelopment Agency.
Vacant parcels on East Palm Canyon Drive. Negotiating parties are the Cathedral City Redevelopment Agency and Andy Jessup Jr. The property is owned by CCC Properties LLC (O'Brien Automotive Team Inc.)
Free mammograms available Wednesday at senior center
COACHELLA -- Women will be able to get free mammograms Wednesday at the Coachella Senior Center, 1540 Seventh St., thanks to the Desert Women For Equality and Desert Pride Center's "We Care" free mobile mammogram program. Appointments: 327-2313.
Community center to host council meeting
DESERT HOT SPRINGS -- The next City Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at Carl May Community Center, 11-711 West Drive.
A closed session is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Pacific Life Open to include new round
INDIAN WELLS -- The second-annual Pacific Life Open Pre-Qualifier, a tournament whose winners move on to the Pacific Life Open Qualifying draw, has expanded this year to include a 64-player Challenge Round.
The Challenge Round, open to the first 64 men and first 64 women to sign up, will be Feb. 16 to 19 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The winners then move on to the men's and women's four-player Pre-Qualifier draw.

Architecture, landscape group appoints Egan
Indian Wells resident Richard Egan was appointed to the city's Architecture and Landscape Committee during Thursday's City Council meeting.
Egan fills the seat vacated by Patrick Mullany. He will serve the remainder of the term, through June 30, 2008.
Egan, former chairman of the Indian Wells Country Club, was chosen from among 21 applicants. He will help oversee a period of major city development, with two approved mixed-use commercial and residential projects in the pipeline. They are the Miles Crossing development and Indian Wells Town Center
The identity of man who died in crash is revealed
INDIO -- Julio Ortiz, 21, of Indio was the man killed in a crash Saturday in Coachella, officials announced Sunday.
Ortiz was a passenger in a car that went out of control and crashed about 4 p.m. on Highway 111, just south of Avenue 54.
Ortiz, who was thrown from the vehicle, died at Desert Regional Medical Center, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.
The crash remains under investigation.
Dancing on tap on Two-Step Tuesdays
La Casita Castle City Restaurant, at 82-530 Highway 111 in Indio offers Two-Step Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. The event features country line dancing, line dance instruction for beginners and contests.

Food Studies Institute founder to talk food literacy
Antonia Demas, founder and director of the Food Studies Institute, a nonprofit organization aimed at improving the health and education of youths and families, will discuss food literacy 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Indio Public Library, 200 Civic Center Mall.

Bill and Susan Hays, soap stars, to sign their book
LA QUINTA -- Bill and Susan Hayes, stars of the daytime soap opera "Days of Our Lives," will sign copies of their book, "Like Sands through the Hourglass," at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Peppertree Bookstore's Old Town La Quinta location, 78-100 Main St.

Homeboy Industries founder to speak today
PALM DESERT -- The Rev. Greg Boyle, executive director of Jobs for A Future and founder of Homeboy Industries, will speak at 8 p.m. today at the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino, 37-500 Cook St.
Boyle formed Homeboy Industries to create businesses that provide training, work experience and other social services for former gang members.
The lecture is open to the public. Cost is $3, free with a valid student ID. Reservations are recommended.

George Lopez gets Palm Springs star
PALM SPRINGS -- Bob Hope Chrysler Classic host and comedian George Lopez became the 280th person to receive a spot on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars during a ceremony Friday night at Fantasy Springs Casino.
"This is a great honor for me and all of us Latinos trying to make a life," he said. "Anytime you all want to have a taco on my star, come on by."
The star will be placed in the sidewalk in downtown Palm Springs at a later date.
To earn a star, people and their presence must contribute to the worldwide prominence and name recognition of Palm Springs.
Authors of mountain book to appear at library
The authors of "A Monument to Treasure: a Journey Through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument" will appear at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Palm Springs Public Library, 300 S. Sunrise Way, Palm Springs.
Susan Bloom and Debbie Bertram will join illustrator Stuart Funk, whose 19 original paintings are on display at the library through this month.
Funk will give one of his paintings to a local Cahuilla Indian boy on whom the book is based.
The event is free.

Suspect arrested in rash of vehicle burglaries
RANCHO MIRAGE -- Rancho Mirage police say they've captured a suspect in a series of vehicle burglaries in the Versailles, Victoria Falls and Mission Hills Country Club gated communities.
Raymond Garcia Araujo, 29, of Indio was arrested about 4 a.m. Saturday. Police stopped the car Araujo was in, and a search turned up several gate transponders, gate keys and tools used to commit burglaries."
He is being detained in the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

Concert pianist Moyer to perform at library
The Friends of the Library will bring concert pianist Frederick Moyer to the Rancho Mirage Public Library, 71-100 Highway 111, at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Moyer has appeared at venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Windsor Castle, Carnegie Hall and Tokyo's Suntory Hall.
