Grandaddy

Blimey - how did I ever miss this band and let them pass me by? They split up last year, sadly... ....but I've only just bought up pretty much all of their back catalogue cos it was going dead dead dead cheap at Fopp, Music Zone and HMV and other places.

I can't believe I never cottoned on about this bunch of Californian skater kid beardos with Pixies, Pavement, Super Furries and Flaming Lips obsessions back when they were being talked about loads in the music monthlies.

Their music has just become the latest background soundtrack to the last month or so chez nous.... I'm really digging their last album "Just Like The Fambily Cat" and their second album "Sophware Slump". There's some really gorgeous melodies on there, and there's a lot of diversity as well. Can't actually say anymore except that I wish I knew about them earlier now so at least I would have had the chance to catch them live. Too bad they're no more now....sniff.... :( but what a wonderful belated/posthumous surprise nevertheless.... :)

Anyone else here a Grandaddy fan?

I remember seeing a video where they were under attack by a guy in a bear suit. I liked the song, but can't remember what the title is

I only heard a couple of songs by them, but I did like Crystal Lake. The song was part of the MusicMatch Jukebox song bundle after installation for my desktop at home.

Liked that 180 A.M. track,and the one called something like He's Dumb,He's The Pilot?

Yeah - the deja vu element came to me when I realised that the intro to "AM 180" was used recently for a BBC radio 1 trailer on the TV - what's that DJ's name? And also "He's Dumb, He's Simple, He's the Pilot" (what a great song!!!) was used repeatedly on that Dom Jolly show "Trigger Happy TV".

I really recommend other people who have never heard this band properly go and get hold of a few of their albums... they really are a pleasant surprise. And they sound nothing like New Order or even the Bunnymen, but what's wrong with that?

Just downloaded two other tracks I have not previously heard - "At My Post" and "Florida". Theyre from an EP I havent yet got. The first song is as good as anything on their albums whilst "Florida" is hilarious.... it alternates between poppy and all-out screaming of the phrase "I don't give a shit!!!". I couldnt stop laughing when I first heard this one. The guy is nuts!
