I used Windows ME Beta2 for about 6 months and it was pretty bloody good, installed the final as soon as it came out...OMG what a shitepile.

Beware Macroshafties bearing betas :D

Well, Me was crap, you can't count on that one, it shouldn't have existed, it was a patch done because most people couldn't get on Windows 2000.

As for Vista, they did a pretty good job at making it robust.. though that is the case since XP, compared to the crap OS that were Windows 95 and 98....

It sticks in my throat, but XP actually is solid (painfully slow, but nevertheless, solid), I'd say my linux machine only outlasts it about 2 to 1, as opposed to about 30 to 1 with 98SE

Vista just seems like Xp, plus a pile of (very pretty) bloat, and DRM gone mad.

If I could change just ONE thing about windows, it would be that it would not stick the desktop up half an hour before it's in any way willing to let you interact with it. Either load all the taskbar shite first, THEN show the desktop, or stick the desktop up, and BACKGROUND the loading of the 800 flummies that live in the sys tray. In a way it's a testament to Xp that I LEAVE anything in autorun, on 98 I had to kill everything except drivers to get something resembling a stable OS.

As ever I will be dragged kicking and screaming onto vista about 4 years (and a couple of new PC's) from now.

That's the compromise they did when people were thinking it was too slow.. not it looks like it's booting faster, but in reality, it's not.

Though I believe Bill's dream is now a Windows that is automatic when you press on.

Well, Vista will be a good OS, but people will apply the "why fix it if it ain't broken" rule... today, Moore's law is no longer true, people don't need to upgrade their computer, and who the hell cares if their os is better... they will mostly upgrade when they won't have the choice...

Otherwise, it's not really needed... I found a lof of annoyments in it, enough to make me reinstall XP, and the DRM is indeed gone mad, so is the security thing... I mean, it pops up a window to stop you every 5 mins from doing the stuff you are doing... it gets very annoying...

Secure, maybe, but at which cost?

We'll see.... time will tell!

Linux will never get serious until they merge all the various versions into one big legit one... just like Firefox, do one group and work on it.

Hey, as long as that super distro is Gentoo I don't mind :D

(Portage is just sex on a cpu, i've been firing software at my laptop all day like a madman, and it's all just so seamless, none of this dependency hell you geet with yer RPM type distros. Gentoo is also the ONLY distro where mplayer works right out of the box,you can go insane and/or die of old age getting it to do anything but the most basic taks on other linuxes and fuck me is that one awesome piece of mulimedia when it works)

Not sure an all in merger would be good, but a few of the big players could come together....it'd be hilarious to see slackware guys trying to trach an agreement with the bleeding edge brigade from Mandriva.

Bottom line is, I would HATE linux to be like windows, (Python-pepperpot voice) "i DON;T LIKE WINDOWS" (/voice) it's nice that some folks do, bless em, but I hate it, and the thought of "linux for the masses" scares the piss out of me.

Vista is thusfar looking REALLY grim for both games ( the older the grimmer), and that DRM business is looking like a cubase-killer, unless I can keep the system clear of all "premium content", whatever thhe fuck the RIAA and MPAA deem it at any point in time. So like I say, kicking and screaming.

BTW, the new laptop, (hostname: Orac, but also known as the portapenguin :D ) has Xp Home on it......it's like trying to run uphill in treacle :banghead: I'm almost tempted to format that off it ( I already stole 40GB of it's drive for Linux) and install a warezed XP pro, partly cos it sucks fewer balls, but mainly on the principe that I own a legitimate copy of LoseDos, and I feel dirty :evil4:

Ste.? The part about going insane and or dieing.. explains alot eh. The guys at the various Electronic Future Shops, Office Depots said if you install a high-speed high capacity USB thumb drive WinVista will use it as virtual memory. Faster disk access. That might help w/ issues..

Penguinistas was a term tossed around for the Arm wrestles over the 'Main Two operating systems. Re: Office versions same gripe as to the various formats but might one of the Higher office sets suit to organize and recognize Cubass.

One of the Positive things coming out of 09- 11 is that TeleConferencing has gotten more efficient- Computers stronger as people aren't flying in for specific meetings. They're having it finished online.

doesn't it have problems running itunes?

Well...Apple SAYS that there may be compatability issues between i-tunes and vista...

maybe Apple just wants us to all run out and buy Macs...

There is only a brief problem between iTunes and Vista, which will be sorted in a few short weeks.

I gather that Vista is the best version of Windows yet. Anyone who has a really fast computer says that it's a much better OS than XP was.

However, you need really up to date hardware to run it. I've heard a lot of stories from people who have been unable to run it on laptops bought in the last year.

So if you're set in your MicroSoft ways, wait till your new craptop arrives from Dell or HP with Vista bundled.

If you have give a fuck about how you spend your money, get an Apple computer. OSX is Unix based, super stable, super fast, and super useable. Also, any application you'll ever want (Office, etc, etc) is available on Mac.

Alternatively, there are lots of great Linux options out there - if you're willing to put a little time and effort into getting the most out of your computer.

I got a MacBook Pro last year, and the experience has been top notch. Every now and then, I have to fix windows PC's for people, and it really brings home what I, and other OSX users take for granted.

OSX is what you get if you take FreeBSD and throw spades of money at it. FreeBSD is Linux's little brother, and probably also the 2nd most scalable OS on Earth, your broadband router at home is almost certainly running the very same thing that works as the underpinnings of OSX ( OK OK, you can get linux on wristwatches and 100,000 node supercomputer clusters, but BSD does OK).

BTW, Vista may have problems with iTunes, but it doesn't support the MS player, the Zune, AT ALL. Way to go there Bill.

As I said before the content protection system sounds terrifying, and very likely to drive people insane. Hopefully someone will hack it out soon.

Vista runs sooooo good on my new laptop... gee, those dual core machines are impressive!

I hear Vista makes FAR better use of SMP(syncronous multiprocessors, or Penguins if u use Linux) machines than XP, so that's something they HAVE got right.

I think I'll grab a warezed one and make a VMware image of it, run it in a sandbox for a while, although how it'll handle running on top of linux on a 1Ghz machine I dunno :D

Why should most people buy new computers with Windows at this point? ...so release a new OS that needs new hardware to work well and design new versions of software to work with the new OS... Dell needs to sell computers, Microsoft needs to sell more Windows and other licences... I'm sure they will try to do this every 5 years, they should (hopefully) reward consumers with improved performance

Didn't Microsoft have a plan (like 7-8 years ago) to eventually sell Windows as a yearly subscription with yearly updates, like Virus software?... this plan must not have panned out

Their plan is actually to go back to the 1960's...where your home PC is pretty much a thin clientb (a 21st century Xterm or teletype), running just a bare bones windows back end. If you want to use, say, MS word ( although why you would when openoffice exists I have no idea, the formats are compatible too), for a while, you log into MS, and use word running on an MS mainframe, paying by the minute.

Yeah I can see fucking CUBASE wortking over the internet, retards.

Trust MS to drag us back in time.

I suppose since windows is based on MSDOS, which is based QDOS (quick and dirty operating system), which was a stolen hack of CPM, which was a 1970's version of unix stripped down to the bare basics and barely functional...AND since windows is NOT an operating system but an "application management layer" (it performs almost none of the functions and old time computer operator would have done, which is what an OS is supposed to replace)...it seems a perfectly consistent thing for billy boy to try and sort out.

BTW, his foundation has donated a fortune to a company who are workingn on a way to make petrol from sugar....great Bill, the rest of us are moving towards cleaner power, and you wanna keep burning petrol after the oil runs out. Satan incarnate I tell you.

Doc you're gonna love this!!!

working at Office Deport today as the greeter guy that I am. Talked to a repeat customer who is a computer tech guy.

He told me he was the local Best Buy where there was a demo computer. It has 2GB RAM and a 2GB processor-real hot stuff!

Well whenever Vista would try to load a picture on that hot number a fatal error would occur and the system would have to reboot!! Another guy could not even use anything on his task bar!! The initial judgment is that Vista as currently configured is the worst thing since Me!! (YIKES!!!)

I will wait until Vista SP 2-ish is out and a lot of the bugs are fixed to get a new computer-if all goes well.

Typical Microsoft....release a new OS that is a system hog and incomplete so that the public are the Beta testers.

I' thought about a Mac for a few moments. But all the other computers on my home network are Windows machines and how do I convert all my XP files into a Mac-friendly format?

A mac will read most of them, and where it wont there will be convertors. I would buy a mac, but I love tinkering with computers too much, and the impression I always got from Macs is that it's either the most retatrd point and drool config options, or seriously deep hacking for which you need to know what yer doing. I could always buy a mac and install linux, but WTF is the point.

Funny you should compare it to ME, cos wasn;t that mainly an eye candy and UI based job as well

We shall see, as far as I can tell at the minute, if I watch a DVD on Vista, I will instantly and forever lose access to my ASIO sound system, and goodnight Cubase.

I have yet to see a bug or crash in 5 weeks, so I wonder what you people do to it.

Microsoft can't control the hardware, like a Mac can, so it's normal some bad drivers will always have bad effects on it.

I got an Me machine for free about two years ago. What a complete piece of stinking shit. Eventually was so unstable that it would have the desktop displayed on start up and just hang up there forever!!

I got a new XP SP2 box for like $600 and it has served me since. Me seemed a patch or someone's attempt to make Win 2000 into a consumer app. what a fuckin' stink bomb Me is.

I went to a local Apple Store and played with a demo model for a good hour. I liked it. Seems the Mac OS is what Vista wishes it could be. Very fast and I could definitely live with it. Felt weird cause I have always used Windows Machines so I had to get used to it.

Whenever my current machines blows up, if Vista is still a nasty security bound bitch, I would prolly get a Mac.

Or install Linux on a PC, just as cool.

Never heard of an unstable Mac under OSX, and even under system7, you had to wreck them pretty bad to stop them behaving well....and I'm JUST the man for the job :D

The only reason I do not have a mac, is that the selection of OSX software is pathetic, whereas you can get most things for windows and anything you want for Linux.

Macs are cool, but I'm with Cambo on this -- Linux rocks.

I remember though that my first computer was an ancient Mac -- ultimately, Macs still held up my interest since we used Macs to do the layout on the newspaper. Very cool computers for graphics indeed! :thumb:

Yeh Macs are cool. We used them at my first real job. They are so easy to use. I dare say that that place went pc years ago.

One of these days, hopefully soon I'll have Linux on this machine.

Ok Cambo and pepperpot anti-Windows Brigade-I can use my wireless internet from Comcast that I current have on my Windows PC on a Mac without any changes, right??

All I really need to do is ITunes, Net surfing, IM Chat stuff (AIM, Yahoo Messenger) and an occasional report on say Microsoft Office. I can easily find all those apps for a Mac, right?

I think you'd find that the selection of software available for Mac OS X is pretty fastastic. You won't see a lot of boxes on store shelves, true, but there's a ton of very high quality stuff available as shareware and freeware, not to mention the huge library of open source projects that will run on OS X's BSD-based core. If binaries aren't readily available, compile them yourself with Apple's free, included dev tools.

Now come on Steve.... you and I know that if MacOs or any distribution of Linux had as many manufacturer doing drivers and softwares for their OS, it would end up doing the same thing.

Install any distribution of Windows on a PC, install Office, do nothing else, you will never have any trouble.. you start to get trouble when you deal with 3rd party softwares.

On Mac and Linux world, people MUST know what to do to develop a software, it's not like using Visual Basic where anybody can call himself a programmer.

The basic mistake Microsoft did is to allow automation on everything, which caused security issues... obviously lead to malicious softwares based on human stupidity... but it could have happened to anybody really.

Vista looks very solid and stable.. though i got one blue screen when unplugging a usb device... XP is also very stable... you can't blame Microsoft for their OS, but all the guyd doing the so-many third party softwares...

Yes, but you'll have to buy them, finding pirate copies on Mac is a bit more difficult ;)

Mac are nice if you do only that... problem is, it's very pricy usually..

For somebody like me, it's a useless machine since I can't do my job with it... unless i'd use boot camp and have Vista on a Mac of course ;)
