BTW,Spotty, you need to check out UDEV and hotplug/coldplug, their hardware database is pretty impressive. Same old story though, anything that works painlessly in windows will work in linux, anything that bites your dick in windows probably wont play ball at all. I mean I just installed a laptop, I could NOT have done it in windows I think, but it was not much problem in Linux, only the wireless card was non-standard, but I still had a choice of a new linux native driver or wrapping the windows one and using it.

So Kirsch, we will have Vienna to complain about in 2 years. So instead of Vista SP 2 we'll have another OS tacked on top of it??? YIKES!!

As of right now, I can't install Vista yet on my laptop. The uni tech support will check it out first to see if some of the XP software is compatible. The findings will be posted during the summer, I think.

I take it your laptop is running too fast? Why else would you be so eager to halve it's performance?

My ancient box runs XP SP2 and is getting slower with time but is ultimately more stable than any other OS's I've had the (mis)fortune to use....2000 Professional, Me, 98, 95 and 3.11

Once it dies (probably 6-12 months if I'm lucky), will I go out and buy a Vista PC? Probably not. A Mac Mini looks fan-fucking-tastic to me.

I can't program to save my life. The last program I wrote was on my atari 15 years ago. You don't need to program anything. AND, things in Linux are human readable, editable and understandable, unlike hkey/localmachine/software...blah blah, which has a data value of 58768762c45252b41108fff629934e879875aa9766b00789979def...hardly much help unless you can actually read and fly-translate hexadecimal.

Hmmm, maybe the user-programmed driver tidbit I heard was a MS Scare Tactic...I also hear there are several different versions of Linux out there (Red Hat, Debain, etc.)...I wouldn't know where to begin if I tried to break free of Senior Cockwad's Software Stranglehold.

Oh, 3rd party drivers yes, technically by users, but then by the same definition, all windows drivers are also user programmed, because the persons programming them use windows :D

The large numbers of versions is baffling to new users I admit, but it lets you pick the one that suits you best.

Fuck it, download Knoppix burn it, and boot it, no install, a fully working OS on a CD. It's a bit slow, after all it's using a CD not a hard disc, but it'll let you see what it looks like with no risk and no strings attached.

I suppose since windows is based on MSDOS, which is based QDOS (quick and dirty operating system), which was a stolen hack of CPM, which was a 1970's version of unix stripped down to the bare basics and barely functional...AND since windows is NOT an operating system but an "application management layer" (it performs almost none of the functions and old time computer operator would have done, which is what an OS is supposed to replace)...it seems a perfectly consistent thing for billy boy to try and sort out.

Do you mean _any_ version of windows? I just tried to install win98se on a new low-spec PC for someone who only wants to browse the web, only to find it was impossible to install because win98's default drivers don't work with the motherboard. I have the proper drivers on CD but you can't install them because you can't get to the point of having the cd drive work before windows98se install hangs! Had to fork out for XP.

What I'm really dreading is what seems to be happening with games (and to an extent with XP), that you are _forced_ to connect to the internet to register to install or even to run a given program (half life 2 I believe does this). I suppose this is ostensibly to prevent piracy, but I reckon its partly to kill the second-hand market. And how long before they start trying to move to a model of making customers pay by the minute for using a program?

Which is funny as hell to someone who's spent the last 6 years telling WinTrolls that shitty manufacturers holding back drivers can't actually be pinned on the OS, and being told "doesn't matter, until Linux supports my fujigyama flummomatic32, it's shit and I don;t care WHY that may be"

I reckon even the smelliest old slackware box has better hardware detection that vista (certainly it only managed to activate about half the systems on my bro's PC, systems all happy under Gentoo-Linux) and that's with fuck all support except from the very best manufacturers.

Still waiting to here from anyone who's watched a DVD on it and tried to use Cubase/Pro-Tools/Ableton....from what I can tell, one DVD and good night M-Audio Delta sound hardware, goodbye, DG-01, you name it.

my current winbox, installed in summer 04 has NEVER had a mail client of any kind. The previous box had a dust-caked Eudora for the last 2 years of it's life, been Linux only for mail since at least 2k02.....still have the mailboxes to prove it (although everything older than jan 05 has been archived out to a quiet corner of some obscure HD partition, my home directory was looking a touch bloated with over 1GB of mail

By the by, Cambo, I'm loving Opera Mini on the mobile phone... I just installed it today.

So, I guess you were right after all with the whole Opera browser idea... I have Opera Mini running, even if it's only on my mobile phone... My word, what a handy little program.
