Windows Vista

Anyone know the deal with it? Do we need to get it? I know it comes as a standard for £100,or as a bells & whistles version for £350.

If i buy a new laptop now,would it have Vista on or is it just an XP add on?

If you buy one RIGHT now, you'll get XP, and either a sticker to tell you Vista will run on it (like I got, which is a larf cos this thing can barely handle XP, never mind feckin vista...thank $DEITY for Gentoo), or a wee voucher thing which entitles you to a free performance downgrade to vista once billy boy starts shipping it.

There are four versions of it though ffs! Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and 'Ultimate' which has Windows Bitlocker Drive Encryption (wtf?)as an extra.

But wait, there's more... Office 2007 has five variants! Home and Student, Standard, Small Business, Professional and, wait for it, 'Ultimate' again. Now I've got to find out what 'Windows Aero desktop experience', Windows Flip 3D navigation, Windows Mobility Centre, Windows Meeting Space, Windows Media Centre, Windows InfoPath2007, Windows OneNote2007 and Windows Groove2007 all do

What a load of tosh...

All I need now is to win the lottery, or have someone offer me £5k so I can buy a new PC and everything I want for it.

to cut a long rant short....if i watch a dvd on my PC under vista, I will never be able to run cubase again because vista will have to switch off all my high quality IO's (including my maudio sound card)

You think it's deliberate? I could see Microsoft taking their monopolizing tendencies into semi-covert territory by letting their programs sabotage all programs from competing companies (I mean more so than they already do).

I had a mess around with the release candidate version bleedin 999. The O/S needs 2gb hard drive space to run and a shit load of memory and dual core processors. Oh and it was fun watching Norton go pop! If you're getting a new lap top then get it preinstalled but if you're running XPSP2 on your usual computer I'd carry on for now. Pain in the arse Microsoft. Some people who I know work in say hospitals and government have not long switched to XP from Windows 2000 and now they've released a new O/S.

I'm sticking with Windows 2000 advanced server :D

There's a lot wrong with this system that drives me nuts........but I had it specifically to deal with work 'boring dull stuff' which it does perfectly well; if I want to download other stuff......specifically music...its really poor and so slow......., but at the moment it'll have to do. The laptop however, is really geared up for the latter, but I never get chance to play on that! There's always a queue.

To run the 'all bells and whistles' version, the PC has to have a graphics card that retails at £400 !!!

Five years they've said in the making most ambitious so said. In order to get past all the bad press that gives indication that the system will be not much more than a fresh coat of paint it does require at least those 3.46 GHz. and something equivalent to Intel Core duo or Core 2 Duo. w/ 60- 80 of free disk space.

Aero and Glass is Vistas answer to Apple's Aqua. The Flip 3D screens and clean crisp graphics is supposed to get us all sidetracked. Is using Hardware now not Software and will require a decent Video hopeful graphs card. More processing muscle. Upwards to 3.325 Gb and as it's in two identical sticks at a time have to buy 4. Funny that.

Security and stability are said to be features. so much so that it wasn't until late last year that Microsoft is said to have let the Various Anti- Virus firms into the 'Labs to get their Ducks in line. If somehow cost isn't an issue.. only two worth considering. Skip the featureless Home Basic and consider Vista Home Premium the Vista Utimate woo- hoo or Vista Business. globeandmail.com Technology personal's Jack Kapica runs a fair running coloumn. he was online this morning 'answering to + fielding questions and statements.

the OEM version sells for 50% ie 100 120 and 200 instead of 200 240 and 400.

if you want bill gates to tell you what media you can use then go ahead and buy it. i for one will wait till they "patch" it.

being an early adopter is gauranteed to give you less functionality and force you to purchase upgrades for both software and hardware.

if you are a gamer expect a 12 - 50 % cut in performance.

vista has two security modes. the secure mode enables "high-def" content. in order to run this way all of your hardware has to have signed approved drivers. if any of your hardware (non hdcp compliant) does not have signed drivers from microsoft (an extra expense for vendors) then you will bump down to the less secure mode.

this means additional upgrades to your hardware. do you really want to buy a new monitor just to watch video. the only thing that makes Media Player useable is the add ons from sites such as freecodecs.com

It will also downgrade all outputs and disable "pro quality" outputs, from the moment you play "premium content" on it.

Makes you watch DVD video through a constrictor too.

Never mind my above example of playing a DVD on my digital audio workstation......some sample libraries will come flagged as "premium".....result.........loading a sample into cubase will force cubase onto the motherboard's onboard sound....whereupon it will scream blue ballix murder and bail out rapidly.

So far, the 3d desktop thing they nicked from linux is the best reason I've seen to use Vista, not what you;d call a killer app.

Hey my new laptop came with windows on it, it's the first time I have ever paid fuckface for his joke of an OS, I think he's done well enough out of me.

My Office Depot tech sales guys told me Vista was more was an "upgrade" not anything worth the money.

I also figured "OK I really use my machine for Itunes music and web surfing, what do I need Vista for??"

I have a Compaq with 512 MB of Ram etc. I almost sold a lady a Vista on it (not in stock=LOL) In order to get anything outta your new box, you have to get Vista Premium-the Basic is just XP with a new name plate and new paint

and no, I don't the first thing about computers-the lady asked me to compare two laptops. I said "I am not a tech guy but I know how to shop, OK?"

Now that it's available I wonder how many security updates are available for it. I remember when XP first came out and even before it hit the shops Windows Update had about four updates for it.

I've XP (SP2) Media Centre Ed. As my computers from PC world I can now download Vista today. I ran the Microsoft Vista compatibility checker thing, and found out I'd have to dump quite a few of my (non-Microsoft) programs due to "compatibility issues". I'm none to enamoured by it's reluctance to run anything non-Microsoft, then there's the extra space/power it needs to run, & how many patches/service packs will it need? Plus It's failed to overly impress me, more like a few tiny steps, instead of a giant leap (slightly better looks/slightly easier to use).

So, even though I can get it for nothing, I think I'll stick with what I've got for the moment, at least until I see how it pans out, and if they fix it's monopolising tendencies.

I've only just, finally, upgraded from 98se to xp! It came with a voucher for a "free" upgrade to vista - subject to $50 handling charge+shipping. And I bet they'll screw us with the exchange rate and it'll end up as £50. Not sure I'll bother, why introduce a zillion and one incompatibility issues, just for some unnecessary prettiness? But the voucher has to be used by end of March. Maybe I can cash in the voucher and not actually install the thing for the time being.

Do they upt the fatal errors in before or after the RC statge but?

I used Windows ME Beta2 for about 6 months and it was pretty bloody good, installed the final as soon as it came out...OMG what a shitepile.
