Is Ricky Gervais a comedian, or simply a comedic actor? Not disputing his writing abilities, but saw Politics twice live and it was basically the exact same set twice, no ad-libbing whatsoever. Word for word. The others you've listed are more what I'd consider genuine comedians just cos they can do proper stand-up, which is the litmus test for me.
Emo Philips
Richard Pryor
Eddie Murphy's 2 concert videos.
Peter Kay
Bill "i had a fuckin great time!" Hicks.
Billy Connolly
and Sean Hughes used to be great too.
other than that, they are all hit&miss for me
Oh, alright, Eddie Izzard & the Pythons but I've never seen any of them live yet
Jack Dee Bill Bailey (genius) Ricky Gervais (not very spontaneous but very funny) Bill Hicks Steve Coogan
Liked Peter Kay in Phoenix Nights but then bought one of his live DVDs and it was pure shite by comparison. Catchphrase comedy for old biddies to clap along to? No ta. At the end of the day Dave Spikey is funnier as well.

He's as funny as piles
He's from Redcar and some round here think he is the bees knees.. He's a one trick bag of shite IMO though.. I know his family, and his daughter's gaff is always good for a party..I have almost told one of his sons that his dad is crap, but then I remembered that he is ROCK hard(the son) so I never bothered in the end...
I find Frank Skinner very funny, but moreso a few years ago, than now. Bill Hicks was a funny lad as was Richard Pryor..Liked Phil Cool as a kid. What happened to him?
