The #1 in Montréal right now is MAD WORLD done by Gary Jules, released about 3 or 4 years ago on the Donnie Darko soundtrack.
Why? Because it was heard in the ads of a video game on TV.
Incredible.... it's a good song, but now you wonder why this one and not another one ?!
P/S: I wonder if Tears for Fear ever managed to get that much exposure with the original!
It was No.1 here over christmas a few years ago. The charts dont really count anyway do they? How many GOOD groups get a number 1 compared to shit artists?
Depeche Mode or The Cure have NEVER had a number one single in the UK,so my above comment probably doesn't mean much.

I mean, Enjoy The Silence was #4 for 1990 over here, so it was #1 at some point over here, I'd be surprised it didn't climb the airwave chart (not talking of selling charts though, because I have no idea if they were #1)

i never understood why #1 at christmas matters in the UK. I was living in manchester that year. OMG GARY JULES HAS THE CHRISTMAS #1!!!!!!! um ok.

I never bother with the charts. Although they do serve a purpose in that if a single does well you're more likely to get another single, album, dvd etc...

Thats possibly down to the massive sucess of X Factor over here,its planned so the show finishes two weeks before christmas with the "winner" having a single in the shops the week before.

if the tv, media, record companies etc tell people that the xmas number 1 is important, then the public believe it.
Still doesnt answer why it doesnt happen anywhere else though

Maybe it's because they don't have a billion, insignificant charts like we do over here.
all through my life i ive only looked at the uk charts to hope that something i like isnt in it
