viacom vs youtube. I knew something like this had to happen sooner or later, but still it will be a shame. I fear we may only get home vids now or may even have to pay a fee.

One day we will fondly look back at this time and say: "Do you remember youtube?"

"SETTING THE STAGE FOR A legal showdown over the limits of copyright law in the age of video-sharing, Viacom today filed a federal lawsuit against Google/YouTube. Viacom has a litany of complaints against YouTube, stemming from the appearance of "more than 150,000 unauthorized clips" from Viacom-owned TV shows and movies that have surfaced on the site. For one, Viacom alleges that YouTube has profited from the copyrighted clips, using them to draw an audience. "YouTube deliberately built up a library of infringing works to draw traffic to the YouTube site, enabling it to gain a commanding market share, earn significant revenues, and increase its enterprise value." ...

Thank God for that, the novelty was about to wear off ;)

It's interesting how the BBC and Viacom take different approaches. Whether you think it's good or bad, the BBC has launched a deal with YouTube to provide content. They even said that they will not hunt down individual clips that users uploaded of BBC related programmes---but they might replace the poor quality one with the high quality real thing. (TOTP, anyone?)

On the other hand, all Viacom does is delete all clips, then sue. I don't go to YouTube to see homemade videos of some nobody doing something irrelevant. (There are some cool fan-made tributes/slideshows...but still....) Maybe Viacom should strike a deal with YouTube to provide their content, like clips from programmes as well as music videos from MTV (especially older ones) so that Viacom can get their money, but the users will still be satisfied. Deleting the clips over and over again wouldn't work. There probably would be someone else or that same person re-uploading it, and there are ways to save a YouTube clip on your harddrive. I think all Viacom wants is money, and I don't think they care one bit about what audiences want worldwide in regards to entertainment. A typical American company, I suppose.

Although for once I thought you had a good post in idea, you mention this, as if other companies are any different. Granted BBC was noted, but come on Japan isn't any better. Sony had its fake "reviewer" giving good comments on its terrible movies in 2000 to boost sales. Mitsubishi tried to cover its terrible vehicle flaws that, when uncovered, almost caused its collapse in the last few years. Not to mention the added crap Sony added to its music cds that caused all sorts of upheval on computer systems.

Its not an American thing, but a business thing. They are out to make money. Nothing new. And I suppose if you were out working, so would you.

Do you mean to say that not everything Japanese is better than the rest of the world has to offer? :confused2:

I dont understand the fuss? They want to take off the 3 minute clips from their shows. Is that what people use YouTube for? I thought it was more for the weird things that turn up on there.
