Carpets/pro et contra

Hard flooring for me and I lay floors for a living. Agree about Laminate tho, once the Royles got it and its getting cheaper and cheaper. I have Karndean flooring throughout, a nice 'twist' carpet on my stairs tho :) and will never have carpets again.

Maya, I agree with everything you've said. No house should have carpets! And Johnny's right about them curtains as well. I've got tiled floors and blinds down the stairs. Kids have got lino in their bedrooms, and the only carpet in the house which was in the main bedroom was ripped up when the cat had fleas last November! Even though it's now just concrete, it is better than the dirty carpet Will eventually get lino put in when we move to the attick room and the wee man gets our bedroom. And the attick will get a cork floor, clean, warm, and soft

A birra both in chez BRF. Carpets arn't too bad,just carry a bit of lino under yer arm incase you come up against some shag pile, for breakdancing like... Solves 9 out of 10 squabbles I'd say.

I think it also depends on shoes. Do you take them off or keep them on when you enter the home? If you take them off the carpets stay clean and the softnessof the carpet has its benefits. If you leave them on, then that's just nasty..........and the carpets need to go.

True, but one problem with hardwoods is you have to be careful about spilling stuff on it. The shoe thing applies to hardwoods too. You better not walk around with wet shoes on my hardwood floors!

My Dyson has given me 10 years loyal service but isn't picking up any more. Do I pay to get it a new hip or stick it in the bin and order a new super-duper one that will do extras ?

I do have a lovely light coloured slate in my hallway, kitchen and family room. :)

whats wrong with carpets, pffft. They warm your house up, surely better in Engerland than freezing your nads off.

My hallway wooden floor is full of little pock marks from my cycling shoes. Much better that than me poncing around taking them off outside.

I have laminate downstairs apart from the kitchen which has tiles.

No acoustic problems as there is enough furniture to soak up the harshness that can occur. I had the oposite effect where I used to live as there was too much furniture in a smaller space, the AV system squashed together and carpet too.

There is carpet upstairs, which is nice to feel on your feet when you get out of bed. The bathroom has some kind of lino in it.

Without rugs on wooden floor/laminate,especially upstairs, the noise would be unbearable. I suffered that in South Africa in a house I stayed in.

The current flooring set up was inherited from the previous owners of the house.

hear, hear!! I agree completely. The house we just bought is carpeted throughout and I can't wait until we can afford to get hardwoods.

Yer all mental....you must all live in huge boomy caverns, Spend extra on wood floors, then spend extra on a hifi with millions of small speakers so you can actually hear anything (because sound from big speakers will be a defeaning, diffuse MESS).

I'd live in a room with matresses on the floor ceilings and walls.

(yes, I am aware that I'll get my chance if the men with the butterfly nets ever catch up with me)
