Favourite Football Riot

Seeing as football and controversial scousers are the most interesting thing at the moment, this seems the obvious thread.

I will be controversial, only much much later.

Only one I've been involved in was Brighton v York City at the supposed last game at The Goldstone. No rival fans fighting - just a hardcore element taking a stand against the sale of the ground and the general plight of the club. Both crossbars got broken to ensure the match was abandoned, it started getting nasty as seats and hoardings got thrown at the directors - but we were on our way down the Old Shoreham Road by then.

As a Tractor boy,we tend not to have much in the way of riots,just the occasional cross word at THE OLD FARM DERBY.

I was at the '80 Scottish Cup Final which ended up in a riot,though being a mere lad of 7,I took no part in it,in fact my old man whisked me and my bro away at the first sign of trouble

it wasnt so much a riot,,but at the end of bobby charltons testimonial,, all the mancs ran from the stretford end towards the celtic fans ,who ran accros the pitch towards them, the mancs retreated rather hurriedly.

then there was end of season m.u.f.c..v blackpool (1975) even matt busby couldt get the fans of the pitch.

burnley v celtic turf moor,anglo scottish cup late 70's i was there.about 15,000 drunken celtic fans ripped the fences out and were using the metal bars as missles,throwing them at police.i swear that day i saw a police dog run away howling.i was in one of the celtic ends and the celtic fans then started fighting each other!! i was only 16 and was shitting myself.on the way to the bus home me and a friend were confronted then chased by 2 big jocks,one of which was flashing a blade !!. i eventually got home shaking and in shock.next morning there was about 4 pages of pictures in the sun and they were calling it the worst football riot ever in england.

Birmingham City vs. Stoke, 1991-92 (result: 1-1)

Remains to this day (I think) the largest outbreak of violence within a British football ground since the mid-80s. I'd like to say I wasn't shitting myself, but I really was. Police totally lost control for about 20 minutes and the place was chaos. It was headline news on the BBC when I got home.

Stoke vs. Birmingham City, 1997-98 (result: 0-7)

I got into the ground 10 minutes late and we were already 0-2 down. Season tickets being flung at the players all the way through the match (it was only bloody November!), and at the final whistle a pitch invasion of about 3000 headed not for the Brum fans (as you'd expect - we hate them) but for the main stand, whereupon they charged up the stand into the executive suite and smashed the fuck out of everything. I stood there with my jaw on the floor while the PA played Bob Marley. Easily the most depressing football experience of my life.

Hells Bells! This is one of my earliest ever memeries. Dad (Rovers)and two Dingle uncles thought it might be a good idea to take me on the Turd. Remember being under one of the stands, cricket field i think and jocks removing the toilets. I think it was half time and we left soon after. Been a few times since watching rovers and every time theres always a tale to tell. But those are for another day.

Agreed: Turf Moor is a fucking nightmare. I've been on three trips there, and each one was 'lively' to say the least.

yea but they had more than they could ever imagine with them drunken celtic lot. actually on one trip to stoke in early 80's it was the most scared ive ever been on way back to the train station.it was when the ref got knocked out accidentaly.the police escort fell apart and it was a nightmare of a walk

Everton in the Cup,came up to Ayresome in 86,they had a top side.. I was 12,never knew what had hit me,shielding my even younger brother, it was kicking off left, right, and centre,coins and loads of chairs flying.That was my first..very exciting.

Barnsley v Everton cup match at oakwell ,late 80's and we kicked the fook out of em!

Not strictly a proper riot but the closest I've come to one.

September 1999 (I think) Champions League. PSV 0 Rangers 1

Went with about 20 Glaswegians via Amsterdam to Utrecht where the owner of the Michael Molls Bar had managed to get a block of 200 tickets.

He'd basically told the club and police that if he didn't get a block of tickets there'd be a couple of hundred Scots dotted all over the ground with tout tickets.

Ended up watching the game at the complete opposite corner to the official away fans, right next to the hardcore home support behind one of the goals, surrounded by two rows of riot police who very thoughtfully held up their shields against the hail of missiles after Jorg Albertz scored in the 84th minute.

At the final whistle we were ushered out under a riot shield 'tunnel' onto police busses with grills on the windows but PSV fans still trying to smash their way in. Then we were escorted straight back to the bar in Utrecht.

I was about the only person not taking part but Chelsea vs Middlesbrough in the promotion/relegation play-off final was something else with trouble breaking out all over the ground...

The Chelsea v Spurs FA Cup match two weeks ago. Was able to see it all kick off from our office window near West Brompton tube station with Headhunters (Chelsea), Yids (Spurs), Riot Police and normal fans all legging it over the station fence and through the nearby cemetery on Lillie Road. A granstand view good rumble but let's say I didn't hang around when I left work at 3:30pm as it kicked off worse in nearby Parsons Green a little later on! Cheers!

All tear-arseing toward the Boro end.I dread to think what would have happened if they got to us.We went up, Chelsea went down Don't mind admitting we shit ourselves. Those play-offs were very eventful,and in the other game at home against Liecster I witnessed a sickening beating on a guy from a horse-mounted copper,who almost decapitated the guy with his baton.Nasty!

Never seen anything like it, the trouble broke out everywhere simultaneously. The stewards and police were under attack right next to me whilst I was busy burying my head in the matchday programme... What a wimp eh?!

Chelsea got a six match home ban for their efforts the next season in Division Two, only season tickets holders and members allowed...

Chester 125's vs Wrexhams lads, about 1999 Chester City centre,outside Brannigans saturday afternoon, obviously the city was full of shoppers. Never seen anything like it since.
