Steve Morris...a possible first

Premise A: Steve has been playing in bands since 1977

Permise B: The first useful electronic drum machine came out in about 1980/1. (anyone mentioning the CR76/78 is clearly basing that on drum samples they've heard and not on the box itse;f, ohhhh the horror, the horror.)

Premise C: Steve is an organic drum machine (actually his timing is better than any MIDI based beatbox)

Conclusion....Steve Morris was the world's first useful drum machine, long before the TR808.

WRONG! Steve has better timing than the MIDI beatbox. Steve is a super-human. I'll take Steve's timing anyday over one of those MIDI pieces of garbage.

The 808 was created to copy Steve Morris... or should have been. Both are hella cool!

33kbps 7 bit+1bit parity each drum note requires the following be sent..... Channel info Note number Key-on Velocity and errm one other parameter that eludes me just now.

=64 bits = roughly (I did it in my head) 15-20ms

= piss poor

Now, make that drum machine the last in a 4 device chain of MIDI-thru's and that timing is shot to shit completely.

Also, if you have 16 parts all playing semiquaver time, with MIDI being a serial interface, the notes cannot all play at the same time, but notes on channel 2 will be sent after 1, 3 after 2 and so on (assuming their position in the sequence is identical).

The Sync-24 protocol used by Roland in the TR and TB series instruments, sets up a 24 pulse per bar square wave, which means that all instruments in the chain respond at exactly the same point (give or take the speed of light).

Therefor Steve is MUCH more like an 808 than a modern MIDI cack-pile.
