Never saw the fuss over the pistols myself. They were good, and obviously groundbreaking, but Frank Sidebottom did Anarchy in the UK better.

Sex Pistols had Anarchy, God Save the Queen, Pretty Vacant, Holiday in the Sun, No Feelings. All cracking tracks but nothing else noteworthy.

PiL had First Issue, Metal Box and Flowers of Romance. Classic albums which deserve regular listens.

Lydon is the man and Steve Jones is an underrated pub guitarist.

And The Clash were shit.

the rock n roll swindle soundtrack contains most of the good covers they did,, road runner and sids stuff,quality geeetar from steve,lost interest in releases after that as they were litterally flogging a dead horse.

SHUG i just read a book about LYDON after his days in the SEX PISTOLS.It was superb and got me to check out ALBUM or CD as opposed to SINGLE.This album caused quite a stir ,PIL being accused of becoming another LED ZEPPELIN.Even GINGER BAKER(ex CREAM) played on some tracks.Nevertheless this is a superb ALBUM.Even though the SEX PISTOLS were about when i was YOUNGER i only ever listened to their singles but only own the odd one.By the time PIL came to the fore so did JOY DIVISION so music then was a good time for me.I was still listening to LED ZEPPELIN though! STAIRWAY to STANIWELL.

The Classic Album DVD series (most of those albums I don't wanna know), has one for the Pistols' Bollocks, and is quite good, recent interviews with most of the concerned parties including the producers. Bought it, and wasn't disappointed with it at all, the DVD case has a yellow cover like the UK album did.

Such great words and very apt.......... THEY PUT AN HOTWIRE TO MY HEAD COS OF THE THINGS I DID AND SAID

It's worth getting the commercially available dvd of the Classic Albums rather than the tv version as it includes a few extras, notably the 'Play In A Day The Steve Jones Way' which is worth the price of the dvd by itself!

Also the documentary 'DOA' is well worth seeing - it includes footage from the Pistols USA tour, an interview with a totally spaced out Sid and totally obnoxious Nancy and the never to be forgotten Terry and the Idiots...anyone who's seen it will know why they're never to be forgotten!

And if you can get hold of it the London Weekend Show programme on punk is one to see as it contains one of the few televised interviews with the Pistols (and the Clash) before the Grundy show and subsequent notoriety.

Then a week later I discovered PIL and I loved PIL even more cause you could dance to it! I love both early PIL and later PIL.

To me, the Clash were a bunch of middle class posers pretending to be working class. I like thier songs a lot, but being that I come from a blue collar working class family, I am offended that the Clash pretended to be poor and working class.

Lydon was the real thing. He still is.

It was when I was 14 and watching a documentary called Punk and the Perfect Beat that I discovered New Order.

As much as I love the Pistols and PIL, for me, New Order were touched by the Hand of God. :)

It was the Pistols, PIL, and New Order that inspired me to make my own music.

Pistols were great, always preferred the clash though. As for the Rude Boy footage, pretty sure its Victoria Park, Hackney. some Rock against Racism thingy!

But still, The Clash was the real thing, the Sex Pistols were the Malcolm McLaren posers, not even a full band really, what with a bassist who had to turn his back to the audience so they couldn't see that he had NO idea how to play that bass.

And as far as music, there's really no comparison, The Clash win hands down.

Maclcom McLaren tried to protray himself as the Svengali of the Pistols. he was not. You need to watch the Filth and the Fury and get your facts straight.

The Sex Pistols were four WORKING CLASS guys who got together and basically started the British Punk movement (In America Punk was aleady happening).

The Clash formed as a RESULT of watching the Sex Pistols. So did Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Buzzcocks, and tons of other bands.

The Clash were a bunch of middle class posers. Paul Simonon was a midle class art school kid. Joe Strummer was the worst.

Joe Strummer was a rich kid, the son of a foreign diplomat. He spoke with a cockney accent so he could sound more working class. What a load of shit. Middle Class Joe didnt understand that pooor working class people and be intelligent, articulate, and even poetic. John Lydons theatrical delivery and excellent diction must have really confused him. John Lydon was the son of poor Irish immigrants.

Oh yeah...and the Pistols bass player not being able to play...

Surely you aren't talking about Glen Matlock? The founding bass player of the Pistols, the guy who played with them for two years and wrote the majority of the music for songs with Lydon? Who has gone on to make some really good solo records and has played with Iggy Pop? Not THAT guy, right? He couldnt play?

Because, you know, Sid was only in the Pistols for thier last 9 months of existance, and he didnt even play on thier album. The reason Sid is well known is because of the film Sid and Nancy and McLarens bullshit filled fake documentary the Great Rock and Roll Swindle. And if those are your information sources, then you don't know what you are talking about.

As Lydon once said: "Sid was nothing more than a coat hanger to fill an empty space onstage. " And he was right.

And plus, in terms of experimentation and ambition. Lydon and PIL surpassed anything that the Clash did.

The same year the Clash released thier retro "rock and Roll" album London Calling, Lydon and PIL were paving the way to the future with Metal Box.

Perhaps. It's all a matter of opinion, I think, comparing PiL and The Clash. But comparing The Clash and Sex Pistols (which was your original premise)? There's no comparison. It's The Clash, hands down.

Well I look at it this way.

Musically, and in terms of writing catchy songs, the CLash were better than the pistols.

When it comes to vocals and lyric writing, John Lydon beats Strummer every time.

But both bands are pretty awesome.

Metal Box is a lot more groundreaking and exciting than London Calling.

But London Calling is a great record with some awesome songs. Complete Control being my favorite.

I like both bands. I've met both John Lydon and Joe Strummer. Both of them were very nice, ace guys.
