Thought we were supposed to find out 'why' John Simm was back in 1973 last night?
Er, did we?
Confess, decided I just had to watch it when rolling in gone midnight, worse for wear. What was the great revelation though? Only line of note I remember was the new acting DCI telling Simm they had to get Gene Hunt?
So, was that it? He's gone back 'in time' just to catch Gene Hunt, or summat?!
Frustratingly no preview but that's probably a good thing.

There's talk of them doing an 80's version with Glenniester & Co but no John Simm.

I only got into this show about 5 episodes ago and am totally hooked... I'm gonna borrow a DVD of the 1st series off a mate and watch the beginning.. once i've seen the last episode.. otherwise I might get a wee bit confused..
Not fussed myself. Although i do like the ad's saying on BBC in colour with the old BBC slogans, thats a nice touch!

Series 1 just ended in NZ- Series 2 wraps it up... If only they'd done this with Lost which is little more than a steaming pile of turd... I'll have to avoid this thread next week when the final curtain falls!

Been avoiding this thread as i thought you'se were discussing the finale.
Just settled down to watch what i thought was the last episode on Sky + only to find it was a repeat of episode 6.

It's definately shaping up to a good conclusion. Wasn't too impressed with the first episode of the second series but the rest have been excellent and we still don't quite know Sam's fate at the moment - mad, in a coma or time traveller. I reckon there are two possible endings. The first could be where Sam is placed in a situation where he has to save himself or Hunt with DCI Morgan being somekind of 'grim reaper' figure in the middle of all this or and I hope this isn't what they've come up with, the 'characters' are actually people Sam know's and subconsciously he's created a 1973 world around them. I'm probably completely wrong and here's looking forward to Tuesday's finale.

Some teasers from one of the creators in this weeks Radio Times to ponder going into the final episode:
1 - Everything points to Hyde. Will the voice at the end of the phone will reveal the truth of Sam's situation.
2 - Test card girl. Always taunting Sam while he sleeps. The test card always came on after the programmes had finished. Does this mean the end for Sam too.
3 - Messages through the TV. Did Basil Brush really deliver a subliminal message in Episode 4?
4 - Gene Hunt. Taken literally, is Sam searching for his father?
5 - The voice at the end of the phone belongs to DCI Frank Morgan. Which is also the name of the actor who played The Wizard Of Oz, someone who wasn't in the least bit what he seemed.
I'm pretty gutted about this. If I miss the first episode of any series, I refuse to watch it. Missed the first one and didn't bother. But this is the one thing my pub mates are always talking about.:(
A good/total sting in the tail ending. Some of our ideas where right as to what may feature in the final episode. Frank Morgan was the 'truth' to Sam's being in 1973 being his surgeon in 2006/7 and the 'Wizard Of Oz' connection in helping Sam get on 'the yellow brick road' to 2007. By (possibly) destroying Hunt (the tumour) then he would be back and everything around him would be a dream. However in the end when Sam was back in 2007 and surrounded by what he thought he knew and valued he didn't feel comfortable with the corporate, politically correct and restrictive policing/lifestyle he once valued so dearly. So through jumping off the police HQ his (possible) suicide/death put him in a situation where he had to save himself or Hunt, Annie and co. the latter of which he ultimately chose. This also points to 'Testcard Girl's' pressence in the show as it was consistently taunting/persuading Sam that 1973 (death) was the best place for him! Overall a fairly good ending to the proceedings and some people I was chatting with kind of speculated Sam wouldn't really wake up from his adventures in 1973. This also knocks down the 'PC' motives of the writers on the show which I never thought were there as the ending shows with all the 'improvements' and 'rights' in our society are we really better off 30 odd years down the line as these 'procedures' may well be getting in the way of what is right and wrong and/or straightforward common sense? Anyway I'd better have a break from the keyboard so thank you to everyone in LoM the best TV drama of the last 15-20 years Cheers!

Guess we'll have to buy the DVD to find out.

As much as I look forward to the Ashes to Ashes spin off, I cant help but think whats the point. I mean Gene Hunt only exists in Sam Tylers mind.
I think the finale of this fantastic cop drama series was quite good and kinda answers the point of it all. But I cant help but feel that the final show was a bit rushed. Maybe a double bill would have conveyed a less frantic pace and explored more truths.
I mean....
All in all the best show for ages. Great actors, characters and dialogue. And I was totally hooked.

- why did Sam have such a personality change all of a sudden?
- what was the purpose of visiting graves from centries ago?
- why was Sam so hell bent on getting back to 2007 only for 5 minutes later realise it wasnt where he wanted to be and ventured back to his alternative world (heaven? coma?)
- why didnt his parents stick around, after Sam was discharged, to take him home?
- and did he look before leaping from the rooftop, to make sure he wouldnt land on a pedesdrians head!?
All in all the best show for ages. Great actors, characters and dialogue. And I was totally hooked.
The graves weren't from centuries ago. Sam Williams parents died in 1950. He did, however, supposedly create a whole new character (Sam Tyler) for himself from older graves which sat near his parents grave, which as you said, were 19th Century. He took his new identity from there.
His folks didn't hang around cos he hadn't seen his Dad in 20+ years, had he? His old man attempted to 'execute' him at the end of the last series, back in 1973.
As for his Mum, well you'd have to feel sorry for the old girl. Her boy comes out of a coma, and then throws himself off a roof 10mins later without so much as a by your leave.
I'd have stuck in 2007 meself. That sort he was sat next to the police meeting was 20x fitter than the bird he went back to! 
I did enjoy the episode but there were a few holes (er, craters!) in the plot as everything was quickly wrapped up. Tyler gleefully throwing himself back into 1973 at the end didn't really reconcile with the earlier moments his character had where he was genuinely distraught at being away from his "future" life, family etc.
Also, the 1973 CID seem to forgive him pretty quickly for his apparent earlier betrayal of trying to destroy the department... that all seems to be forgotten by the time he gets back. Isn't he a DCI Sam Williams as well? A myriad of loose ends left dangling...
A better ending would've been Sam waking up in 2006, getting back to work but also deciding to look up who actually was in charge of CID in the "real" 1973. From then an ending scene with Tyler tracking down an aged Hunt or Annie and an immediate realisation they knew each other would've been a nicely bizarre touch, roll end credits...
To be fair, a few hours in modern day Manchester is enough to make you want to throw yourself off a building anyway; maybe getting back to 1973 had nothing to do with it
