Now granted I think this guy should be flogged and beaten, possible torn apart by some big dobermans and rotwielers, however California has crowded jails, letting REAL criminals go early so they can house this idiot???

Guy beats a doberman puppy, breaks its ribs, then returns it to the shelter claiming his hand hurts from hitting said puppy. Gets 45 days in prison.

Yup! I think people like this should get the death penalty or life in prison just as if it were a human. And a real hefty torture regimen while in prison. I'm talking about daily/weekly beatings as he did to that dog. Sorry. Just because animals can't speak or express themselves as we do and are of a different species classification doesnt mean they don't have souls and feelings, too... and that the law can't handle crimes against animals just as they would for humans. In fact, in a lot of ways I think animals have more soul and goodness than a lot of humans.
This shit just makes me depressed and sick to my stomach.
The guy should have his eyes gauged out and mutilated while fully conscious, too. The piece of shit, fucker.
Don't get me wrong, I have no real issue with the guy going to jail for this, IF we had enough space in our prisons. However, we stuff the prisons so chuck full of people that 9 year sentances turn into 2 year.
Make more prisons; start jailing people that really deserve it; or start killing all those off death row to make room for others. In any case, our system can't work if the prison system is seen as a joke.
Got no sympathy for a puppy-beater. Lock him up and throw away the key. 
Don't give a flying fuck if the jails are full, either, lock him up anyway. Most of those in jail and prison have been caught up in our "War on Drugs." That's obviously going well....

I'd test cosmetics and cancer treatments on him rather than block up the prisons. Its absolutely disgusting hurting an animal. Anyone who harms kids or animals would make excellent guinnea pigs and save a lot of suffering for innocent animals.
I've not read the story, but the summary offered by the posts here suggests that this man needs help rather than punishment.

Don't go to China then... they eat dogs! and I'm sure they do pretty worst things to them when they actually kill them instead of beating them.
I'm sure there are dozens of examples of things that are done differently in China. That's hardly an argument for adopting Chinese law or custom here. Anybody seen that guy who blocked the tank in Tiananmen Square lately?
