What ones do you suggest that are free? I've found some java ones but don't want to start downloading anything without hearing what you guys recommend. Cheers.

Might take you a while to get your head around but it's well worth it in the end.
I believe ReBirth is free now.
There is also FreeBirth and Hydrogen, but they're for linux.
Most windows standalone drum boxes have hopless timing, just warning you now. If you lay down 4 mins of 120bpm, and try to drop that into a song on cubase....BIG mess.
there are free versions of cubase et al on steinbergs website, use that for yer sequencer and that leaves you to try any vst plugin you like (re birth, attack,etc) for drum sounds, even samplers so you can make yer own sounds
If I had to pick one it would be Attack, it really is versatile, however it IS only a drum module, maybe our original poster yearns for the joys of 24-step programmed loops?
NI Battery is good too, but it's GUI can floor my 2GHz PC, go figure. (it also costs too much if you don't know a certain Russian website)

that's what I use more often than not
