Train passengers asked to get out and push

PATNA, India (Reuters) - Hundreds of Indian rail passengers got more than they had bargained for when the driver of their train asked them to get out and push. It took more than half an hour to move the stalled electric train 12 feet so that it touched live overhead wires and was able to resume its journey, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the eastern state of Bihar on Tuesday after a passenger pulled the train's emergency chain and it halted in a "neutral zone," a short length of track where there is no power in the overhead wires.

"In so many years of service in the railways, I have never come across such a bizarre incident," said Deepak Kumar Jha, a spokesman for Indian Railways.

A train's momentum usually allows it to continue moving through neutral zones.

India's rail network carries more than 15 million people daily -- more than the combined population of Norway and Sweden -- but its safety record often comes in for criticism.

Funny thins is tho,us brits built all the indian railway infrastructure,they STILL use medieval trains,but theirs is Still better than our by a long shot! :confused2:

I got a train recently.

I was on a bus this past winter that got stuck in a snow drift, and because the bus had no shovel, the driver told everyone to either get off the bus and go home or dig it out and push.

Sooo...if the bus had caught fire, would he have expected you to jump out and piss on it???

Largest town in Europe with no rail connection.

They're supposed to be building one though, so Corby will be a COMPLETE non-entity :lol:

Would like to see this tried on Network South East (or the SW region for that matter).....3rd rail power would make this awful interesting.

Getting out to push is better than waiting for 8 hours for the Thunderbird loco to get there :nod:

Well, I was once on a Greyhound bus in New Britain, CT, an when the bus started smoking, the driver just told us all to stay inside and open some windows.
