FOPP

According to BBC radio 6,FOPP record stores are about to go bust.Not even enough money to pay the staff for this month.Might have to make a special trip down to my local store today.

Why? If they're about to go broke the last thing they'll do is have a sale?

Depends, their stock has a certain volitility as well as large storage overhead, the receivers might want it sold off NOW.

No. it will go back to the suppliers and be redistributed to Muzic Zone, HMV Asda etc. Shop items are usually in stock on whats known as 'sale or return'.

If they get an album in and it doesn't sell, they dont just stick them in a box in the back room. They go back and thats how they end up turning up in bulk years later for 99p in the sales.

Who said anything about a sale? Most of their stock is a fiver,any cheaper and they might aswell give it away. Also,i thought FOPP perchased Music Zone earlier this year.

Didn't the same thing happen to music zone thats happening to Fopp now? i.e. go bust?

Its a shame really,but how much profit can you possibly make on £5 a cd or £3 a cd in some cases.

Great shop, sad that its coming to and end. There wasn't one in N.Ireland anyway but always made sure to visit Fopp when across water.

Got off the train from York this morning and wandered round to buy the new Editors album only to find it closed. Guessed there might be a problem. Real shame. I remember the very first Fopp on Renfield Street. Seemed to be years before he expanded from just that store. Or was the Edinburgh one around circa 88/89 too?

If they're going to go bust anyway you could argue it hardly matters what they do. Fopp deserve alot of credit for lowering CD prices in general over the last decade. If it came down to either Fopp or HMV going out of business I know which one I'd like to see shutting up shop.

HMV and Virgin will be rubbing their hands with glee as they can put all their non-sale CDs back up to £17. The BPI wonders why people download MP3s as well... most albums just aren't and never were worth the money.

Not quite, Ally. Heard on the radio yesterday that, due largely to digital downloading, HMV's profits are down 50% and they're shitting it....

This is such a bummer. :( One reason why I bother going into Manchester city centre at all is to to spend several hours mooching around our beloved Fopp records - picked up £20 quids worth of cheap clobber from there last time out (seven cds and two DVDs).

It's just sad that yet again the best value music shops are closing down as a result of either competition or the increasing market in downloads thus meaning they cannot sustain having so manyshops open because people's attitudes to buying music have changed.

It's true though that were it not for Fopp, HMV wouldn't have been lowering the prices of so much back catalgoue titles to try and compete. A sad day for music retailing - first Music Zone, and now Fopp. :(

This is what i don't understand - seeing as Fopp actually bought out the remaining Music Zones, and then still closed over 50 of them anyway (including Stockport and Ashton, Altrincham) it's likely that these remaining branches of Music Zone will be shut as well. The end of an era, sadly.

may be they should be re-named as FLOPP...

Shame that..there was one next to Manchester Post Office.Thought..great..every dinnerbreak..cafe downstairs as well,spent 1st couple of weeks collecting Mozzer CDs for a fiver each,and coveting the framed Hooky picture on the stairs.

there's a place here in Austin that's got that "low-life tour" poster signed by the band...framed...hangs at the back of the shop...I keep thinking of asking how much it would cost to acquire said item...but I'm afraid the price would be quite high, and that my resistance would be quite low...

Know what u mean Jeff,that picture in FOPP was £100! In Black and White.Mind you I can do some decent pictures off what I've got on my computer and get it blown up to A0 size for £20.

Sure is a shame,used to enjoy goin thru to Sheff to spend loads and get loads in fopp .

We,ve only got 2 shops in town that do cd's now,HM FOOKIN V and Woolies,but woolies is shite,so looks as if i'll order all mine from online now!
