Your thoughts on why so many bands love covering Dancing Barefoot?

I have never EVER heard the original version and didn't even know it was a cover until tonight!!!!! I had always thought it was a U2 original! I love U2's version so much that everytime someone asks me what my favorite track of theirs is, I tell them Dancing Barefoot. Little did I know this song belongs to a chick named Patti Smith. I also discovered it was done by another two of my favorite bands, Simple Minds and The Mission U.K. Couldn't believe those guys covered this song as well. I thought to myself, cool, they like U2 just as much as I do

It was only until I googled the name of the track and discovered it is from Patti Smith. Being that I have yet to hear the original, would someone mind sharing and uploading it somewhere? I'd love to hear it.

I'd also like to get your thoughts on which version of the song is your favorite, and why so many bands felt necessary to cover the song.

Y'know doc, I hate to take this off topic but I HAVE to know....many people are not fond of Bongo 'round these parts. But my question is...WHY? Why do many people here hate him? Please don't reply with "because he's a pompous cunt", etc etc....please give me some detailed examples of what he's done or said to make you guys feel this way. Has he ever talked bad about any members of New Order? If not, why slag on him so much? Also, for someone who arguably gives more to charity than any other musician, the hate for him vexes me even more.

I don't like Bono because he's too preachy. He'd make a fine politician/ambassador but he mixes his politics and his faith too much with his popular art.

I can't even listen to U2 anymore because their music has become synonymous with Bono's extra-rockular activities.

Yes, rock and roll can change the world but 99% of the time it's an escape for people, and 100% of U2's music is NOT about escape. No one can be THAT MUCH of a humanitarian.

He reeks equally of being 100% earnest (tedious) and 100% fake (even more tedious).

Probably because Patti Smith is an influential artist.

Oh, and: David Bowie, Patti Smith - educate yourself, son. These are musical pioneers who changed the face of rock music forever.

U2 never brought anything new to the table, they are the sum of their influences (Joy Division, Eno, The Clash, blues rock). Best Band In The World indeed. That's another reason so many people resent them.

The way U2 keep releasing Joy Division songs labelled as written by Thon cuntyballix is enough for me.

Didn't they release I remember nothing a year or two ago, or was that someone else.

They also released a JD song on one side of a single, and an A-HA one on the other side, that's just insulting.

And insert all the usual cunt stuff and what everyone else said.

gerg.... the sound I'm making right now...... Love U2 et. al version. I think REM did one, too. Live or recording. Cant remember which. Both, I guess. My thoughts: Great tune and Smith's most well known, I think. Geez, I can't believe she's 70! Never really got too much into her, or the MC5. Might dive in this weekend.

As far as Bongo; leave the guy alone and let him go around doing what he can,. Great voice, lyricist and a cracking band to boot. U2's sversion is quite haunting, though and can see why it's one of your fave's.

When people do humanitarian work, it should be a personal endenevor. If they spread the word and publicize the issue I have no issue with that. It is when they try to silently strong-arm the public with a topic with "if you don't support them then you must be against them", all the while with a smile on their face acting like they aren't doing it, I don't like. More importantly is how he preaches on a subject that he has never really spent anytime doing. He talks about the hunger in Africa, yet he spends a day or week there (without shedding his celebrity status) and acts like he "understands" the people. He hugs them, cries with them, while wearing his $1,000 sunglasses, then flies back to his 5-star hotel. If he supported and brought forth a real humanitarian worker, let's say a doctor that has lived with the poeple for years, and supported the doctor's claims, then I would fully support the effort. But his humantiarian efforts are pretentious and self-gratifying.
