Hmm, should I get into Bowie?

Bowie is obviously a rock icon and a legend of astronomical proportions. But for some reason I've never felt compelled to give him a chance. The only songs I've ever liked were Ashes to Ashes, Modern Love, Let's Dance and Love is a Drug. But what kind of music are we talking here?

What style or genre would you put his music into? Is he more rock and roll, rock-a-billy, blues-ish rock or heavy grungy Nirvana-esque rock? If I like a lot of 80's rock bands like say, The Cure, New Order, or U2 would I like Bowie?

What album would you recommend to get started on? Which is the most accessible and newbie friendly album?

Bowie defies category - he is his own genre.

If you want to go the easy route get the 2xCD Best Of collection.

If you want to dig deeper and understand why he was such a huge influence start with the 70's trilogy of Low, "Heroes", and Lodger, then get Scary Monsters and Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars.

Low was one of Ian's favourite albums.

So, where do you start? If you were able to watch "Rockstar Supernova" reality show last year, the contestants sang a total of 5 Bowie songs, namely: Starman (by Magni), Changes (by Storm), Suffragette City (by Storm), All The Young Dudes (by Zayra), and Heroes (by Magni).

Of course, I have my favorites. I love the 5 mentioned above, plus Ziggy Stardust, Let's Dance, Modern Love, Life On Mars, Rebel Rebel, Dancing In The Streets, Moonage Daydream, This Is Not America, Young Americans, etc., etc.

i would say lookinto his older stuff...the older stuff is always better with most artists....i always liked his ziggy stardust character...very amusing...

personally i think aladin sane is his best album,but i got into that through my brother and his mates in 1976'ish.might not sound the same to someone trying it for the first time now

Thanks for the heads up guys. I'll definitely grab the best of, and even perhaps the 70s trilogy. Does the 70's trilogy come in a boxset? In fact, is there a box set PERIOD I can grab of Bowie?

I gotta say, he's a genre unto himself. Go with "Changesbowie" first, it's probably the best overall look at his best years (1969-1983). After that, it's up to you (I got Heathen when it came out, but I haven't listened to it in ages)

He claimed later that was an act, acting the characters out in public, 100% not gay in real life... whatever. It doesn't bother me other than the the old "its all just an image", just like Depeche Mode.

The current compilation is called "Sound + Vision", I believe. Lots of classic songs. Low is his arty-ist album.
