Oy, it rained for most of the day yesterday. Luckily it stopped just in time for the fireworks.
Stood in one part of the neighborhood, and there were fireworks just goin' on EVERYWHERE! ;) That's probably the only good reason for celebrating 7/4.
Oh, and I'm a day late--happy birthday to my home country.

With chronological perversity Radio Four had a program on about the meaning of thanksgiving day yesterday.
Quite interesting, never previously understood what the 'pilgrim fathers' thing was all about and all I knew of Thanksgiving I learned from that Addams Family movie.
They had a Brit historian on who rather peevishly suggested the US probably owes more of its heritage to the earlier settlement of Jamestown (with its high levels of violence, massacres of the Indians and fondness for slavery) than to the Puritans of Plymouth Rock (with their amiable relations with the Indians, dislike of slavery and relative peace and tranqulity).
Also kind of interesting the way the Mayflower settlers came up with a 'compact' that was a model of tolerant democracy for its time, and supposedly the origin of the US style of government, while at the same time being the most intolerant bunch of ban-everything puritans you could hope to meet.

Yeh, but I had no ends of trouble getting my replica pistol on the plane.
As I understand it the Jamestown of today that anyone has been to is really a different place from the original, as the original Jamestown settlement pretty much died out after a few decades becuase it was full of young blokes (with very few women) who spent all their time getting drunk and fighting and forgot to grow any food to eat.
I'll just take it that you like the ickle poem then
