I have this question ever since I came to this country. My wife calls all my music "gay shit". Anything that is electronic dancey, techno, especially house, is called gay. Why is that? Why is it wrong to like?
Am I supposed to turn the volume up to thrash metal or Matchbox 20 or Green Day? Is it more "manly" (or just more stupid, in my view)?
Even though some of the singers I listen to are homosexual, overall dance music (from disco to electroclash) seems normal to me, i.e. for all people.
Give her another slap and remind her that she obeys, and will listen to your music and will like it. That's the way you do it, isn't it?

Yes, but nevertheless I'm sick of the same crap that is poured through about my music.
What was that about her following your rules and appreciating your opinions? more power to her. 
well all you can do, is to expose her to it and with a bit of luck she will eventually like electronic music.

I wrote this a while back when someone asked "is New Order a 'gay' band?" but it seems like it could fit in here.
"Gay" is an unwieldy qualifier. Gays from Cole Porter to Bob Crewe (produced Frankie Valli) to any number of disco folks (the fellow who invented The Village People-HELLO) have been making music forever. They were gay people making music-like anyone else might from their own situations and experiences. They were musicians and producers who happened to be gay.
The idea is more of an aesthetic that influences others to explore because it is good music. Ya see it all the time, influences from various sub-cultures being taken to the mainstream...
from Cole Porter being sung by Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to Johnny Mathis. Rob Halford taking his appreciation of leather culture and making it a hyper masculine image for Judas Priest that influences the hyper macho world of heavy metal.
The guys from New Order have said that one of the first times that inspired them after the death of Ian Curtis was a visit with a gay friend to a gay disco in Manchester. I chuckle at the image, three very straight men in this gay club. However, the NO guys said it was music unlike they had ever heard. They had been listening to Kraftwerk in Joy Division and this night prolly put them over the top onto the path that would make them New Order. They took music that inspired them and pushed the boundaries. Almost 30 years later, we listen and are inspired by them. Who cares where it came from, music just rocks if ya love it
It's simple.
Guitars have longy things on the ends that real men love to grab hold of and play with.
Keyboards have pokey things that certain not so real men like to stick their fingers into.

I once engineered/mixed an album for local country artist who looked over my synth racks and demanded that I "wasn't putting any of that shit on his record." I wouldn't have done it anyway due to the material. Some people just fear electronic instruments...

Why are all men who have no taste in clothes and listen only to bad mainstream rock or 80s metal considered heteosexual? This is hardly true, maybe not openly gay but some have male to male sexual contact, a lot more than society admits. Why? Society is kinda stupid. Don't expect rational logic.
Why is dance music considered gay? Cause steroetypical gay men tend to like sterotypical dance music. Stereotypes tend to be correct to a limited extent, but then steretypes can lead to a hell of a lot of stupidity.
But your wife, a women, hates dance music??? What the heck is wrong with her! Chicks usually like dance music. Tell her her tastes in music are redneck or lesbian or something, two can play that game.

Whatever happened to 'queercore'? Wasn't that supposed to be punk/metal music by gays who hated dance music. A friend of a friend was in a band with the excellent name of 'up to the elbow'. Perhaps your missis would approve of that genre more?
I've always tied them via the Disco influence. Disco originated in New York gay culture, so it makes sense to me that Eurodisco, Italo disco, and the synthy stuff that sprang from them would also appeal to that audience. Gays also have traditionally had the best dance clubs, at least from my experience.

Just say to her "Look just because I like dance music,it shows I've got veried tastes,from all walks of life,and it doesn't construe that my sexual preferences veer towards same sex preferences.
