How A Festival Should Be — Forum Archive

It was the Indian Summer Festival in Victoria Park, Glasgow on Sat/Sun. If all festivals were like this I'd attend a lot more.

Half hour bus journey from the end of my street. Set in a lovely park. Capacity of about 3000 No mud. No bams. No silly hats, big sunglasses, flags or inflatable aliens. No queues for the bog. Lots of luvverly sunshine. An outdoor Heiniken bar with loads of nice sturdy tables, parasols and table service (!!!) by some of the best-looking serving wenches I have ever seen. And most importantly.....An interesting line-up of bands as opposed to the usual "circuit" you'll see at the biggesr festivals.

Flaming Lips headlined on the Sunday and were great fun as usual although set of the day had to go to I'm From Barcelona who rocked it. Honourable mention to Maps and The Rapture too.

More of the same next year please! :nod:

Easily the worst band I saw this weekend. And if the food queues had been any shorter I wouldn't have had to witness their entire set. Thought they were absolutely dire. Seemed like desperate measures to wander on in a huge ball then fill the entire arena up with green balloons. Just haven't got the tunes to back-up the stage presence.

They were good for 10 minutes- during Race for the Prize and Fight test. And then did it go downhill quickly...

I was really disappointed. Was really looking forward to them, then just found them to be awful.

See also: JAMC. Nice tunes, but fcuk me they've lost their bite.

Christ it must've been a spectacular line-up if the Flaming Lips were the worst band you saw all weekend! Granted, they've been dining out on the hamster ball stage show and last album for a bit too long now but they're still a quality band.

I honestly don't think I saw a bad band all weekend although Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were a bit dull. And as there only was one proper stage I saw everyone! On the contrary, a few bands who I'd written off in the past, particularly I'm From Barcelona (do we need more twee Swedish alt-pop?), made me change my mind about them.

The whole experience was just fantastic and a complete change to the whole 50K capacity mudfest that I'd experienced before. I believe the buzz term for these new, smaller events is "boutique festival". Sounds a bit naff but so fuck. I mean come-on, table-service?!!!!! At a festival bar?!!! No queues for anything?!!! Bootiful!

i love it when the ticket stub says £0.00 on it. simply the ONLY tickets to have.

summer pops at aintree pavillion. no horses. just nags with handbags.

don't think anyone else is on. just them.

so far...I've kaybeed free tickets for 10cc, pretenders, van morrison and aussie pink floyd. but i thought i'd go for these.

Actually, thought Bloc Party were awful, not helped by the fact they came on to Freddie Mercury's "Barceloooona" (ooh, how ironic) - and not just a minute of it, the full fcuking track!

Said I'd give them 3 songs. I gave them 2, then wandered off to watch LCD soundcheck, which was infinitely more pleasing. Even though it was 100 degs in that tent.

Saw the entire Flaming Lips set though. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back.

I'm From Barcelona came onto exactly the same track, but fortunately only a 30 second snippet. The lead singer then proceeded to crowd surf during the opening track. :eek: On a pink lylo. :eek: :eek:

It was quality. 3rd best of the weekend after Arcade Fire and Editors.

Didn't warm to either of those particularly. First time I'd seen both as well. :shrug:

LCD, Chems and Lily Allen for me.

30mins of Felix da Housecat was good too, even though that 30mins included 15mins of shite (ending with Smells Like Teen Spirt - dear, oh dear)

(edit - just remembered I saw Arcade Fire at the same venue two years ago, I've got pics of them on me camera!)

There's a new festival around here. It's called Area 4 and it will take part on a little airport between Muenster and Dortmund (about 40 min from here with a car). I'll go there and I hopefully will spend the nights in my own bed. It's from the 24th to 26th of August. I pray for good weather...

Perhaps anyone cares ;o)

Err... well... not yet... But if there is any Interpol date I would perhaps go there (if I find someone to come with me) :D . (I still got hope that they will eventually appear on the Area 4)

and no more than one band playing.

My favourite was Reading '93.

I woke up at 08:00, rolled a **** and lay there with my head and shoulders (not the shampoo) sticking out of the tent and no bugger trod on me.

Fifteen minutes later, I was treated to the sound of New Order sound-checking (or at least Steve and the roadies) for their performance that evening.

Only reason I've ever been to a weekend festival is New Order and bloody glad I did. :beer:
