My computer is well and truly goosed this time (I'm using my mums at the mo). I went to switch it on yesterday morning, and it immediately switches off as soon as the start page appears.
Managed to read a message box just in time, saying something about windows application shutting down.
Any ideas? Will I still be able to retrieve all my files from it?
I am planning to buy a lap top this week anyway but would still like to try to fix it.

Sounds like a corrupted XP from what you're saying though, probably needs a clean reinstall. The hardware's probably fine.
Your files *should* be fine too, just get someone to take the old hard drive out and put it in an external USB box and plug it into the new laptop.
It'll appear as a new drive and you can drag your My Documents folder across.

It's possibly a virus, best to get the repair shop to run a thorough scan on the drive once they've removed it.
Get them to give the hardware a once over too. Random shutdowns can sometimes be caused by bad power supplies, memory, CPU overheating etc.

I would tend away from it being hardware if it goes boom at the same point each time, there's usually a random element [1]

Have nice enclosures for about 20 quid, I just got one and they are moron proof....6 screws 2 leads and no drivers.
But scan the crap out of it as soon as you attach it to another machine, and for god's sake tick "do fuck all" if windows pops up a "what should I do with the new disc" box.
Worth trying one thing though, as soon as all the first guff you see vanishes stab F8 like a mad woman (takes a few tries to get the timing right) until it shows you a menu offering "safe mode" and select that.
If it boots in safe mode, we will speak again.
[1] unless you clock your cpu up25% like some tard did yesterday, resulting in the machine not being able to stay awake long enough to get to BIOS 
(got it there in the end and set it back to something more reasonable)

A different stupid geek computer question, but maybe I'm missing something here... Why are almost all the new computer monitors for sale now WIDESCREEN? How many people are seriously going to watch movies on their desktop computer? Youtube is not exactly going to be HD quality anytime in the near future, are most porn downloads now HD quality widescreen now or something? I doubt it. Everybody is going to be looking at everything on the internet all stretched out horitzontally to fill out their widescreen, it'll be all fucked up. Unless you a serious graphic designer or something, isn't this wasted space?

Many games support widescreen.
When looking at the net the monitor uses a wide resolution, so everything is the right shape, you just have more screen.
With the new wide screens you may quite possibly be able to either use the 'View' dropdown or right click within the 'display' and change the 'apect ratio' (appears as 2:1 or 14:9 or whatever) if you're running a DVD or game, other wise try 'Settings ~~~> Control Panel' so that whatever you're displaying appears on screen in the right proportions, like most DVD players.

It could, but a static error would already have been fixed by chkdsk, and a more dynamic one (like the dreaded creeping bad sector) would not produce the same error each time.
BTW, Burt...I DARE you to get one of those Orange free lappers, no I double dare you. The contents of several end of line parts bins put in a box and shook I'd wager. What do they stand to make from you in the contract term? 150 bills ish? less the actual service they occassionally half provide, laptop is left at being worth about £4.99
