I can only just hold it in my hand - is that too hot?
Do I win 40 degrees?

They get BLOODY hot, and so will your laptop if you ever do anything so reckless as use it on top of your lap!
The fire hazzard is the self igniting battery
Can you fry an egg on it Col? If you can, put one on for me and a couple of rashers - haven't had breakfast yet... ![]()
Personally, i'd be a bit concerned, although the Mrs' laptop does give me slight lekky shocks if i have it on my lap
It's like this........ If it's a smaller form factor than most, there's your reason for being hot right there...less heatsink and surface area. If it's the same as any other laptop PSU, then maybe it IS a little hot. However, fire hazzard me arse, it'll melt it's coil and trip out long before catching fire.
If it IS too hot, the most likely scenario is that it will stop working, end of story. Like my nice DVDR I bought a coupla years ago, the area above it's PSU could actually blister skin, and after about 6 months it gave up. I'd lost the fuckin receipt too :(
You could always split a feed off from it's output to run a little 40mm or 60mm cpu fan glued to the PSU!
My Dell Inspiron is coming to the end of it's quiet phase now, the fans are running a little more often and making a little more noise, after about another year it'll be deafening instead of totally inaudible like it was when it arrived. Nothing a new fan wont fix, but they are a bastard to replace on a lapper.
Dr's tip of the day....fans are cheap, buy more, replace your old ones[1]. Spend 20 quid replacing all your machine's fans with quieter newer ones and enjoy a quieter PC that bombs less.
[1] replacing them is a megadoddle on a desktop PC, you can even change the processor fan WITHOUT taking the heatsink off! Either unscrew the current fan from the 'sink and put a new one on, OR buy a 60-80mm adaptor for a quid an stick a slower but larger CASE fan on it....that's what I did and my (linux) machine whispers. The windows machine has a fan controller and runs from moderately breezy to a sound like a jet engine warming up.
Thanks Doc.
Although I'm not talking about the laptop, but the transformer in the power supply lead.
I doubt I could cook anything on it.
It's about the right temperature for sofenting hash though, I would say.

Only when little spots of fluid get on the keyboard.
Mine does that, too ![]()

Sounds about right :D
I know you meant the PSU, but give the lapper a chance, it'll get good and hot too.

I have an idea where you could store it to achive that. ![]()
Quick tip BTW for anyone with a new laptop they want to last a while.
If you use it a lot on the mains, particularly if it's on..off..on..off..on..off (and not just a big remote control that stays on for weeks at a time....like mine), then find out how it feels about running without a battery.
Even though the thing is plugged in, the battery still goes through tiny charge cycles the whole time, which seriously reduces it's operational lifespan. Some laptops are fine with you robbing their battery pack, some wont start at all, and still others will boot then drive you fucking mental with all their odd problems.
