Big meteor storm tonight apparently, particularly visible in the Eastern seaboard of the US.
And a great excuse for this thread title.

Actually the perseids run from late july to early sept, twas merely the maximum a few hours ago, the point where the Earth's orbit coincides with the mean centreline of the comet's path.
The Alpha Aurigids promise a better show in Sept, but they are a more tightly define shower, so tend to only happen around their maximum, which will be best viewed from Hawaii. We'll catch a few in the UK the nights before and after.
Besides, pointlessly watchin for meteors is a good way to see satellites, a much more intersting passtime.

look under "iridium flares" and make an effort to see the next -8 or brighter (-8 is ten times brighter than -7 and ten times dimmer than -9)...prepare to shout "HOOOOLEEEE FUUUUUUUUCCCK!!!!!!"...really, I guarantee the first time you see this little trick, you will totally freak.
I shall correct you O'Cambo...meteor showers are a great way to get yer other half in the mood, as it is romantic....don't ask me how I know
