inspired by the cocteau twins thread....
the much maligned genre of goth(ic) music has been...err...much maligned (but not without reason). still, there seem to be a handful of quality bands that are either goth or at least partially dabbling in the genre.
i invite you to submit personal preferences of bands, albums, or songs that might be characterized in the goth vein (usually an opened vein) but are--surprise!--actually worth listening to.
Gothic, in it's purest form (such as Poe, architecture etc) can produce some of the most stunning imagery you've ever seen.
Goff, as in 'My daddy won't buy me a car so I'll dress in black and cut myself', is hilarious.
The second scenario sounds more emo than goth.
Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and others are what I consider goth. There is an excellent website at www.myspace.com/postpunk if you want to access some of the links of classic and new post-punk artists. Most of the artists on there are gothic.
I have absolutely no idea (actually I don't really care that much) if Einstürzende Neubauten is included in the genre or not, but Halber Mensch is an album I never tire of listening to. Some, of course, may question whether or not it's actually "music" that they make, but I don't give a toss about that either.
The sound of things falling apart while the world at large is falling apart.....you know it makes sense. 
Siouxsie And The Banshees claimed to be punk, not goth... but... anyway, I'd suggest that if you don't like the whingeing emo idiots and want to hear some interesting music not previously mentioned, I'd go for:

Awe... I love goth.... got all my black stuff in the back of the closet...... Now , I just get it out for halloween (never thought I'd say that !) or a concert....

Most of the stuff I see as Goth is probably more Industrial but I admit "Floodland" by Sisters of Mercy of Mercy is brilliant-always will be.
Industrial that always felt dark and doomy with anger and outsider intent (therefore Goth-ish to me) was like

Bauhaus, the early Cure - though musically it's pure post punk.
Depeche Mode - yes, I've been surprized they are labeled Goth in music media. But then there's Front 242...
I really don't give atoss abut HIM, Evanessence, etc. Actually they make me vexed.

First band that comes to mind is local band Mira.

Depeche Mode --band that doesn't deserve to be in 'goth' catagory.
My Chemical Romance, and all those modern 'goff' bands --sorry excuses, falling under 'emo'.
AFI, around 'Sing the Sorrow' era --decent, acceptable post-modern goth. I'll leave it at that.
Joy Division and pre-EGG New Order --a class of goth by itself.

I much prefer industrial to actual goth music
