As soon as I saw the thread title, that is the film I was going to post. Very bleak, but brilliantly acted by Emily Watson. Dancer in the Dark, another Lars Von Trier film, is also very bleak.
I was off sick the day after I watched BTW, it wiped me out.

Definitely. I remember being made seriously miserable by viewing that as a child. It's coloured my view of 'the North' ever since!
That Nick Broomfield film about the Chinese cockle pickers ('Ghosts') was rather a downer also.

It is an amazing film. But I thought "no children at all, looking at the end of humanity, no hope, the world as a terror state".

Gangster Number 1 depresses me because it's the over-rated badly acted piece of shite I've ever sat through... I hated it when it came out. Thought I was missing the point because so many people raved about it. So I made myself sit through it again on Sunday when it was on Channel4. But it was still utter shite... It actually made me angry to watch it. Bad accents, hilarious "tough guy faces", over-glamourised violence. Oh and Paul Bettany is an absolute wanker.

I think 'Requiem For A Dream' is quite unforgiving in its relentless emotional drain and possibly the most downbeat film I have ever seen.
There's really no happy side to it at all. From the main character's lonely mother, who spends all day in her flat, looking at, and dreaming of, gameshows to the main character himself, who has numerous addictions, along with his girlfriend who grows too dependent on him because of hers. The mother then gets addicted to legal pills, prescribed by her doctor.
What's really sad is, at the opening part of the movie, it portrays the character's of having some hope, but soon you see it's really just a false sheen.
It's really a movie about four people, all who have dreams but you know, deep down, that they are going to a place worse than nowhere.
It's a good film, well made and the camera work is excellent, just don't watch it if you're feeling down yourself!
The main character and his friend, get arrested, their habits get stronger. So much so that his girlfriend turns to prostitution, all climaxing into a horrendous last 15 minutes, where it sinks to the absolute pits, for all of them.
It's bleak, it's horrible in it's portrayals and there's nothing 'good' in it. This is anti-Hollywood and that's what appeals to me. If you can bare it, watch it as it's a really good film.
It makes most of the so called 'tough' films out there look like a Doris Day romantic romp.
What sets it apart is, this is modern reality and that's something Hollywood glitz can't work its so called 'magic' on.
Spider-man 2 ... cause Peter Parker gets Mary Jane and in your life you are NEVER going to get your Mary Jane. Well, I found it depressing.
Saddest? KING KONG (2006) and A.I. pretty much did me in,actually losing the power of speech on way out of cinema,and the ending to RETURN OF THE KING. Depressing? Hard one that. One does spring to mind ...Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER,sure the visuals are still stunning now 25 years later,but it's still a bleak outlook.Depressed me to fuck when I saw it in an old flea-pit back in 1982,but it's one of those films you grow to appreciate. Got my 5 Disc box-set on pre-order!! The new FINAL CUT,also includes the last Directors cut,the cinema version with the narration,and a rarely seen International version,with a shit-load of extras.
Jack, Nuit & Bruillard is indeed a top depressing choice. For those that haven't seen it, it's about WW2 concentration camps/ the "showers" etc. Watched it at Uni in a lecture theatre. Some guy pops outside, comes back in a couple of minutes later with a can of coke and a bag of popcorn. That turned a few heads!
In terms of fiction Steve Buscemi's "Trees Lounge" is pretty grim. If you've ever felt your life was a bit stick in a rut, this is NOT the film to give you encouragement!
And Eraserhead...well that just plain wierded me out. Not to be seen by pregnant women. Ever.
