Huh, actually the World Series might only involve the United States' and Canada's teams (the latter one has two among 30 !), but 99% of the time the World Series will show two teams from the United States. Now, if the word World Series isn't self-centered to death, I wonder what it is!
But you have to know that originally, "World" was a brand name which sponsored the baseball series, so hence the "World Series". At least this is what I was told... maybe we should check out mlb.com to make sure?
But as footy goes, I tend to agree with Brian! Ties shouldn't exist! There should be a showdown after the regular time.
How do you explain that there are so few goals nowadays? I remember games with scores like 5-4, etc......... ?????

The same goes with the NBA. The winning team of the NBA is given the title 'World Champions'. I think we all know that the NBA champions whoever they are would have to be the best team in the world but its a little over the top to automatically give them the title of 'World Champion'.
Oh by the way, the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world so the sport of football has to be doing something right. Who'd want to be a goalkeeper if there were no offside rules ?
The only thing that should be changed is the pre tournament qualifying rounds ... There is no Oceania representative team ... Instead Australia, has to go through this bullshit qualifying round against some pretty good teams ... We're better then quite afew of the teams in the World Cup ....
So, obviously our American friends clearly don't understand the offside rule and can't see the merit of a draw. How long will it take them to comprehend that they've just been stuffed 3-1, but still progress to the second round?

You make some valid points concerning the amount of time-outs in basketball (a game with 30 seconds left can be dragged out to 10 minutes) and the freakish salaries that are paid. I blame the greedy (and powerful) player's unions for demanding the outrageous sums and the stupid owners for paying them.
As far as conditioning is concerned, I would venture to say that if you took a professional athlete from a particular sport and dropped him in another, he would find it difficult to ramp up to the physical demands of the new sport.
Example: Let's take World Cup Football player and strap 10 +lbs. of gear on him (helmet; shoulder pads; hip, thigh and knee pads) and place him at running back (in American football). Then, over the course of the average 4 minute scoring drive (that's 4 minutes elapsed from the play clock - there will be television time-outs, dropped passes and actual called time-outs that can stop the clock ) let's feed him the ball 5 times. That's 5 time of literally running for his life. That's 5 times of being crushed head on, from the side and being dragged down from behind by very angry, very large and very fast defensive players. Something tells me that World Cup Football player might be calling for a blow before too long.......just as American Football player would be coughing up a lung into the 20th minute...... :D

Incidentally, the American use of 'World Series' and 'World Champions' has nothing to do with world as we understand it. I can't recollect the entire history but needless to say it has some association with business rather than the world as an international forum. Tournaments won in the States as 'World Series' does not in any way mean the international world.
Just a poor choice of words that's all.
If they manage to beat Mexican Fahitas in the last 16 I'll eat my sombrero.

Nobody I knew who watched much of the US/Poland match is besides themselves with absolute glee over advancing to the second round. They're happy with doing so, but after the regression today, especially the first five minutes, it just seems a bit odd to be overtly proud. (This is based on the fact that I could only watch the first half live, and had to tape the second; which I have yet to view).
Oh, and you are so right Heather, thanks to your coach for his leadership skills, Korea has been quite impressive so far.

As fer the American footballer's carrying round extra weight with their protective gear - why do the big jessies have to wear protective gear? you don't see Rugby players with loadsa pads etc... Stop the time outs and get rid of the protective equipment - it'll make it a lot more exciting;)

I can safely say I have never ever wanted the USA to win anything before, until now !!! Good luck against the Germans, it'll be tough, and they will have the ref on their side, but you never know.....

in case none of you are aware, I have approximately 50 employees that report to me, and of that 50....48 are from Mexico...so I was just a tad bit apprehensive about how their attitudes would be after the game...
but I was much relieved to discover that they are all now Americans....
I didn't give the US a chance to get past Mexico...and I don't give them a chance to get past the Germans, so who knows what this means...
hmmmm....maybe somewhere along the way, we could see the USA play England...wouldn't that be interesting?
