While I freely admit that I don't follow "football", I will stop down for a cursory review of World Cup action.
That being said, I must give major props to my home team. First, a major upset of the fifth ranked Portuguese and then a tie with South Korea on their home turf.
Can anyone give me an overview on our chances against Poland?

America have surprised a lot of people - I didn't give them a chance against Portugal!! Fair play to em - Poland have now been knocked out of the competition, so all they are playing for is pride, I can see America winning this one
But that's just my opinion;)
Should stuff them, if Beasley and Donovan play well. Have to admit that the USA are looking a decent team these days. Kind of us to let you get good at something at last, wasn't it ;)
It was a good game. Korea Repubilc vs USA. American team did well. They are really strong team. Especaially, they were faster than Korean players. America will go the next round. Korea clinched 1st World Cup victory against Poland, so American team will beat Poland.
Saw some of the Portugal/Poland match, before departing for work, just before the second goal was scored. Seemed to me that goal broke the Poles spirits, and they were lucky that Portugal didn't get about 3 more.
Second half of the Korea game made me nervous; not much of an offensive attack, and leaving it up to the defense and and Brad Friedel in the goal. Feel quite fortunate to have gotten a draw.
America???

If I'm not mistaken, the land mass on which you and I live is known as North America.
I think when most people hear the word "America", the contiguous forty-eight states of the U.S.A. is what comes to mind.
However, when people hear phrases like, "All American's are fat and stupid." or " America doesn't exert enough influence on the world stage." or "America tries to exert too much influence on the world stage." or " American's are imperialistic bastards." I don't think that you or my other friends to the north come to mind.

That old debate again, but.. America? There is kind of many teams from America down there!!! Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, USA, what else.. :D
And no Canada.. hum, we can say that is because there is 5 months of winter here, but go figure Sweden then...

It's so frustrating when you see "US Tour" on a T-Shirt then see Toronto and Montreal listed :D

Can't remember who, but one of our American friends commented last week that no game should ever end in a tie. Well, a tie could well see the USA through to the second round tomorrow......possibly to play Italy!

seems to me that America is part of the name of this country...and it isn't only people from the United States that call this country America and our residents Americans...While I was an England last week, I had more than one person call me an American, and that was the Engerlish that were calling me that...
I don't recall seeing anyone claim that the USA was the only country on this continent (as a matter of fact, YOU were the first one to bring it up)...so why are you having such an identity crisis...or is it an inferiority complex?

Hi Seb Yes, I really think that concert was canceled due to poor ticket sales :( And yes, i was at the CEPSUM concert to see NO and Echo and the Bunnymen and it was magical for the teenager that i was. There was a lot of JD/NO fans in Montreal back then.

Ties? Ties are for formal occassions not Sporting Events. I've been watching the World Cup matches and a couple other things really bother me about this "Sport". If the object is to beat the defender and score goals, what's this bullshit about a player being offsides when he runs faster than the defender and gets a pass in the open field near the goal? Offsides my ass, that's a good play. What if in AMERICAN (you guys are Canadiens, we are Americans, but we all live in North America...are we clear on that?) football, a wide-receiver catches a ball 5 yards ahead of the nearest defender and is called offsides because he didn't wait for the defense to catch up. Absolute nonsense. Stoppage time? Bullshit. Just stop the f**king clock when you need to and quit this ridiculous stoppage time bullshit. Soccer/football is a flawed game that needs to be fixed to be interesting. Offsides, stoppage times and ties are enough to make me switch off the telly and watch the water drip from my kitchen sink.

Thanks for the back up on the whole "American" thing. I know that we "Americans" are guilty of many things: from jamming McDonald's and Microsoft down the world's throat (at the least offensive) to actually being Imperialistics bastards at times. But I don't think using to the term "American" to describe ourselves is being myopic.
Jeff, were our cousins able to figure you for a Yank right off the bat or did you try to disguise yourself? :-D
As far as ties and offsides go, I can pretty much live with them. However, I've never had anyone give me a good explanation as to why offsides is needed as a rule.
