England were playing (like it or not) really well as a team and there was defo a strong team spirit. We know that although Sven was in charge, Gerrard, lampard and beckam were pretty much also calling the shots about team play and formation.
You know the dynamics of a team changes on a season by season basis - it never stays the same. The squad England had in 2004 is totally different to the squad they have now. Totally. Even the players that are still there have aged, e.g. Beckham 4 years ago is not the same player he was, and look at Campbell - outstanding a few years ago, but well past it now - Carragher is gone, a real loss....
I could roll on with this argument, but think it's just common sense to not compare the team of today, to something that happened 4 years ago when the situation and squad was entirely different, be it players, ages or managers!
The squad England had to field on Wednesday was barely recognisable - even you must appreciate that. We don't have a good squad now - that's the truth, hence we were not good enough to qualify and that's why we did not. No question or debate in my eyes!

Only mindly amused that nobody has yet really gone to town on the loss of Terry, Ferdinand, Cashley, Owen, Rooney and Hargreaves from the first choice XI against Croatia, and indeed from up to half of the group games. Losing top quality like that does make a difference - what would Croatia have done without the Kovac brothers or Srna? They'd have been half the side.
We should have enough quality to cope, and management strong enough to orchestrate tactics that suit those players available, but we don't. In spades. And the buck for that stops in the back pockets of the clubs. If they didn't pay silly money it wouldn't keep getting sillier.

i was watching one the other week. Eire v England. Liam Brady, stevie Heighway, steve Coppell, Colin Todd, and Trevor Cherry. 
Bad it was. dead bad. Wembley half full.
Stuff all that. rather play friendlies agianst Spain, Italy, Germany etc, or NOT PLAY at all.
England should have sent out the Liverpool '78 squad - yup, even Emlyn Hughes (RIP) and they'd have played far better.
Seriously though, the thing that seems to be missing isn't talent, it's having someone to inspire a rather apathetic team. Not just the manager, but the FA - 'Fuck All' as they've been renamed. Players need to REALLY want to win, rather than thinking that they can rely on opponents being scared of well-paid big names. The England squad does have some very talented players, but with no real fire or desire to win.
The Scots and 'Northern' Irish on the other hand, are rather lacking in talent in the main, but have the desire to get somewhere, to prove themselves and say a big 'F-off' to people who doubt them. That really does seem far more important when you look at the international game as a whole. It certainly makes their countrymen & women far more proud of them for losing valiantly and having tried their best.
The England team hardly seemed to try.
England need someone with passion in charge of the FA, someone with passion in charge of the England team, who can instill that passion and desire in anyone who puts on an England shirt.
Still, all this means I'll have some money for a holiday next year instead of going to see England put in an apathetic performance in the finals...

Don't know why anyone expects us to do well. We always scrape thru the qualifiers, then scrape our way to the quarters, then get slapped by a better team.

So you're saying that the press weren't reflecting the mood of the nation when they were banging on about "the golden generation" before Germany 06? That this was something they invented that nobody else in England believed in?
As Shug pointed out, countless interviews with the squad prior to the WC highlighted the fact that, at the very least, the English players thought they were in with a shout. I refuse to believe that this wasn't the general consensus among the fans at large as well.
Christ, I even remember Tim posting on here that he was a bit concerned that the New Order Liverpool gig last year was the day before the World Cup Final. He was worried that should England be there (ha ha) it would pose some logistical problems for him getting home to watch the match!!!

Agreed, Team dynamics definitely change, I did say the papers have calmed down since the last WC. I know McLaren was useless, but you'd have thought the players would want to put up a fight. The team you fielded on Wednesday, should still be able to beat Croatia at home. Espescially when they know they need a win to top the group, or at worst a draw.
I hate to say it, but MON is exactly the right person for the job.
